Grace nodded. ‘Not that I want to go into the throbbing heart of visitor-ville, though. It is incredible that within a few kilometres you can go from the sublime to the seedy with brash bogans in the middle.’ She paused. ‘Makes me think . . . Are we just showing one side of Balinese life – an island within an island – by limiting ourselves to the Kamasan?’

‘We’re selling the hotel, an image, a world of its own . . . old Bali in jungle aspic, morphing into the height of travel indulgence,’ said Steve. ‘It’s not a documentary.’

‘True,’ said Grace. ‘But I wonder if the campaign would be stronger if we put some of that sort of thing in as well.’

‘You mean, showing sights that aren’t connected to the hotel?’ Mateo asked. ‘I like that. Break away from the clichés.’

‘It might be a good idea,’ Steve said. ‘Let’s think about other places that we could film.’

‘Thanks everyone.’ Grace got to her feet. ‘See you at the hotel later. Hope the surfing shoot with Andy goes well.’

By mid-afternoon Grace had had a delicious lunch and a siesta and was feeling refreshed. Switching on her phone, she rolled her eyes when she saw that there was an email from Spencer in her mailbox. As usual there was no preamble or niceties. She could hear his snippy tone of voice as she read:

I want to get on top of your progress and check what you’re doing up there. I want to see concepts so far. The general outline we have here is pretty flimsy. I need the full brief. Spencer.

His curt email annoyed her, and she decided he could wait to get a response. When Kamsi, the cook, brought her some fresh fruit and a creamy iced coffee, she calmed down. She was here, Spencer was there. Thank heavens.

Grace was deep in thought when she heard the housemaid Sri quietly call, ‘Ibu Grace? You have a visitor . . .’

Turning, Grace saw Andy at the door and stood up. ‘Hi, Andy. How did the shoot go?’

‘Better ask the boys. Steve seemed happy. I caught a few waves and had a great time. Nothing to this movie business.’

Grace laughed and invited him over to sit at the table by the pool. ‘Would you like a coffee, a drink?’

‘Thanks, no. I’ll take a load off for a minute, though.’ He pulled up a chair and sat opposite Grace. ‘I was just on my way to the hotel to get ready for tonight’s bar run-through and I thought I’d call in and see how you’re doing.’

‘That’s nice of you. It’s going really well, I think. It’s all so stimulating and so much more than just another job.’
