“You free?” Kade asked.
“Almost.”
“Good, because we need you back here. Tom called Willow.”
Fury flooded my body. “He’d better have a fucking good explanation for all this.”
“Not so much.” Kade’s tone told me more than his words. Whatever Tom had said, my friend didn’t like it, which meant I wouldn’t either. “He also didn’t give away any information we can act on. I’ll tell you more when you get here.”
“Thanks for the update. I’ll be there as soon as I can.”
When I caught Tom Lennox, he was going to regret dragging his sister into this mess.
The line went dead, and I turned back to Joanna. “Am I free to go?”
“Yes.” She cocked her head. “What was that about?”
I debated whether to answer, but Joanna was a good cop and we needed her on our side. “Tom Lennox called his sister. According to Kade, he didn’t say anything we could use to find him.”
She nodded. “I’ll need to speak with Willow to follow up.”
I stood. “I’ll get her to call you.”
She followed my lead, and we left the interrogation room. Zeke was waiting outside, having apparently already been released.
“We need to get back to the penthouse,” I told him without preamble.
He frowned. “What’s wrong? You seem ruffled.” He glanced at Joanna. “What did you do to him?”
She pursed her lips. “It wasn’t me. He got a phone call.”
“Ah.” Understanding lit his features. “The lovely Willow.” He gave her a wink. “Our great and mighty King has caught feelings.”
She ignored his comment, and so did I.
The drive home seemed to take forever. Zeke gave me a hard time, but I didn’t care. I was anxious to see Willow and make sure she was all right.
Zeke dropped me off at the front of the building, and I jogged to the elevator. I arrived in the penthouse foyer to find the same guard from this morning standing watch. He nodded as I passed, but I didn’t stop for conversation.
A blur of color caught my eye as soon as I opened the door, and then Willow was in my arms. I closed my eyes as I embraced her. It felt so right to hold her this way. The tension eased from my body because she was, at the very least, physically safe. I kissed her forehead, never wanting to let her go again.

Willow
“I’m so glad you’re okay,” I said. “Kade reported something had gone wrong but wouldn’t tell me what.”
He raised his head and met my gaze. His eyes burned with a strange kind of fervor. “Let’s sit down and we can talk about it. I want to hear what happened with you.”
I bit my lip. The last thing I wanted to do was replay my conversation with Tom, but he needed to know, so I supposed there was no avoiding it.
