ANNABELLA. James…?

JAMES. Leave me! Will! William!

WILLIAM runs on, breathless.

WILLIAM. Aw Jesus.

He raps gently on the box.

James? It’s Will. Time to get up. It’s morning.

The lid of the kist opens, JAMES stares out at him.

See? It’s me.

JAMES. William…

WILLIAM. That’s right. Are you awake?

JAMES. Yes.

WILLIAM. Are you sure? How can you be sure?

Slowly JAMES holds up his hand, WILLIAM takes it gently and makes a tiny cut with his knife.

JAMES. Because I felt that.

WILLIAM. There you go. Are you awake now?

JAMES. Yes.

WILLIAM. So you need to get out of the box.

JAMES climbs out.

There you are, I’ll go and get you a drink. WILLIAM leaves. JAMES looks round, seeing ANNABELLA and MARY properly.

JAMES. Who are you?

ANNABELLA. It’s me, Annabella, your sister.

JAMES. No you’re not.

ANNABELLA. James, it’s me! You know it’s me! We talked last night and…

JAMES (cutting her off). Alright… alright… so what are you doing here?

ANNABELLA. I came back.

JAMES. What for?

ANNABELLA. Your wedding. You married Mary of Guelders. Today.

Yesterday.

JAMES. I know that. Where is she?

ANNABELLA (looking uncertainly at MARY). She’s…

JAMES realises who MARY is.

JAMES. Jesus, Jesus… (Tries to pull himself together.) Did I hurt you?

MARY shakes her head.

Christ. I… eh… I have nightmares sometimes. Did they warn you?

MARY. Yes. But I did not know it was so bad.

JAMES. No.

MARY. This is very bad.

JAMES. Yes. Sorry. No much of a wedding night for you.

MARY. No. You were… drunk. You sleep. Then this.

JAMES. I said sorry!

He turns back to ANNABELLA.

What are you doing in my rooms? Where’s your husband?

ANNABELLA. We talked about this yesterday. I never met him. I waited in Grenoble for years but he never came to marry me. You sent an ambassador asking for my dowry back.

JAMES. Did I?

Livingston probably took care of that.

ANNABELLA. So I’ve come back to live here. Do you remember that?

JAMES. Of course I remember that! I’m not crazy! I’m just… half-asleep… I didn’t recognise you.

ANNABELLA. No. I didn’t recognise you either when I saw you again. Just the mark, on your face.

JAMES. No mistaking that.

MARY is getting herself together. Edging out.

(To MARY.) I just have nightmares sometimes. You don’t need to be scared.

MARY. I am not scared. I am… very brave.

JAMES. You’re nearly crying. Look at you.

MEG has come back on.

MEG. Jamie, she’s hundreds of miles from everyone who loves her. She barely speaks the language and she doesn’t know who you are.

JAMES. Well, I don’t know who they are! Either of them!

WILLIAM comes back with wine.

Are we all ready for the hunt, Will?

WILLIAM. Aye, the rest of us are. You’re not though, are you?

JAMES. Well, help me then!

He’s looking for his clothes, pulling them on.

Meg, take those two out of here and… get them fed or something.
