- About the Author
- Also by James Phelps
Smith: What about the rest of his face? Was he Slavic, Caucasian, African? What colour hair? Short, long?
Dimitrov: White. Maybe Slavic, maybe English. Hard to say. But I am sure he had no eyebrows, no hair on his face. And he smelled strange.
Smith: What did he smell like?
Dimitrov: Like a hospital.
Smith: Do you mean bleach?
Dimitrov: Yes. Like bleach.
Smith: Was he wearing a backpack?
Dimitrov: Maybe. I don’t know.
Sami pulled out the second transcript as Maverick took a corner as if he was in a rally race. The second witness was a Mrs Petya Georgieva. Sami skipped the formalities and got straight to the meat.
Smith: When did you first notice something unusual?
Georgieva: When the priest came out. He stood at the front looking at the back of church. I turned to see what he was looking at. I saw a man with a gun and a knife coming from the back [of the church].
Smith: A gun and a knife? Are you sure? Can you describe them?
Georgieva: Yes, I’m sure. The gun was black, not silver like those cowboy guns you see in movies. And the knife was big, like a Rambo knife.
Smith: Can you describe the man? What did he look like?
Georgieva: Yes. He was a strange man. He had no hair, no hair anywhere, not even eyebrows.
Smith: And how tall was he? And can you describe his body shape?
Georgieva: I can’t really say. I was only looking at his face, the gun and the knife. I would say he was of normal build. You know? Not fat, not skinny, not small, not tall.
Smith: And what happened next?
Georgieva: People saw him and started to scream. He yelled for people to shut up or he [said he] would kill the priest.
Smith: And he said this in Bulgarian?
Georgieva: Yes, but badly. He had a thick accent and confused many words. When everyone stopped screaming, he asked the priest to speak English and the priest agreed. But I couldn’t hear much after that, as I was in the middle of church and they spoke softly. The man then said something to the priest and pointed to the other man.
Smith: The other man? You mean to say there was another attacker?
Georgieva: Yes. There was another man standing in front of the door at the back of the church. He looked the same, like the one with the gun and knife. He had no hair too, and wore clothes like him: a black hoodie, black pants. He had no gun or knife. But he had a bomb.
Smith: How did you know he had a bomb?
Georgieva: Because the first man said so. He yelled in English, ‘Everybody shut up or he’ll blow this shit up.’
Smith: He said this in English?
Georgieva: Yes.
Smith: Did you recognise the accent?
