I charged 1000 euros for a list of 100 contacts, which was really very cheap. Let’s imagine that just half the numbers from an address book are active and the owner of one of the numbers buys on average 40 euros of cocaine or hash per week; one number would have paid for itself in a week, and a dealer could keep a customer for two years who might bring in others. Sometimes I had huge numbers and I made over 3000 euros in one hit, but generally speaking the phone seized from a dealer wouldn’t have more than fifty or so names. We’re talking here about an ultra-perishable commodity, because drug users constitute a very volatile clientele. Driven by an MO of urge/frustration, they’ll change dealers at the drop of a hat if they don’t immediately obtain the product they’re craving, and their number won’t be worth a thing anymore. So you had to be super-quick . . . And following my promotion, because I was the one responsible for dispatching the paper files, it was even faster: as soon as a file from the drug squad passed through my hands, I had it scanned as a priority. Then in the evening, because it was also my job to close up at work, I would duplicate the CD-ROMs I was interested in and take them home.
