  37. About the Publisher

“It’s fine.” Decker shook his head. “You’re just a nicer person than I am.”

“I’m sure you’ve had it up to your neck with the both of them. You’ve had the relationship. I’ve just been a bystander.”

“That’s not true. Chris feels closer to you than to me. He’s always calling you. That’s probably why he came to us. He knows you’re a soft touch.”

“It’s not him, it’s the kids.”

“Whatever.”

“Please don’t be mad at me even if you have cause.”

Decker exhaled. “Well, it was my suggestion for Gabe to call Chris, so in a way, I guess this is my fault.”

Rina stopped packing. She came over to him and threw her arms around his neck. “You didn’t do anything wrong. We didn’t do anything wrong. They are both crazy. We know that. But …”

“The kids.”

“They look so lost and so scared. Not to mention Chris. I’ve never ever seen him like that. He’s a wreck.”

“He is frantic,” Decker said. “Know how I know that?”

“He said please and thank you,” Rina said.

Decker gave her an eye roll. “You ruin all my punch lines.”

Rina kissed him. “I am sorry about bulldozing over you.”

“Oh, forget it,” Decker said. “I bought a house without asking you.”

“You didn’t buy it without me. You just put in an offer.”

“You’re nitpicking.”

“I’m giving you an out.”

“Yes, you are.” Decker kissed his wife. “Thank you.”

Rina smiled. “I’ve never flown on a private jet.”

“That makes two of us.” Decker checked his watch. “I hope he hired a good pilot. This would be a bad way to end it all.”

“Stop being morbid.”

“I want to shower before we leave,” Decker said. “That way when we crash, I’ll have on clean underwear.”

She pushed him away. “I have no intention of dying, so if that happens, you’re on your own.” They finished packing in silence. She checked her watch. “We still have some time before the Chag goes out. I’m going to start cleaning up.”

Decker said, “Let the kids do it. It’s their mess.”

“I’m sure they’ll help.”

“I don’t want them to help you, I want them to do it for you. They’re adults. They’ll be happy to do their fair share. But you have to ask them.”

“You’re right. I’ll just check on Sanjay and Juleen.”

“No need for that either. Let Cindy and Koby deal with them. They’re going to be with them anyway.”

“I can see you just want me to sit here and watch you be angry.”

“No, that’s not what I want. While everyone else is cleaning up, I want you to talk to Chris alone. He’s probably holding back, and you can get more out of him than I can.”
