  37. About the Publisher

“Still currently unavailable, but Jager did say that Bertram Lanz is with his parents and we can stop looking for him. I told him before I can call this a closed case, I’d like to speak to Bertram.”

“And?”

“He said he’d try to arrange something. I also told him that I’d like to speak to Kathrine Taylor as well.”

“He confirmed that Kathrine’s there?”

“He didn’t say yes or no. All he told me was that he’d try to arrange what I asked for. Once I talk to Bertram and Kathrine myself—make sure they’re okay—I can close that case. Inroads, Harvard, inroads.”

“Why do you think he’s suddenly cooperative?”

“Maybe it was all the calls that we made to the local police. Maybe it’s been long enough for Bertram’s parents to feel comfortable about taking Kathrine. Who knows?”

“Are you going to call Kathrine’s parents?”

“I will once I’ve spoken to her. I’ll also call Lionel Lewis and Renee Forrester. I’m sure they’d want to know that Bertram and Kathrine are okay.”

McAdams said, “And Elsie Schulung?”

“She’s the question mark,” Decker admitted. “When I asked about her, Jager told me that she came to Germany with Bertram and Kathrine, but she took off and he doesn’t know where she went.”

McAdams said, “Do you think he’s telling the truth?”

“Don’t know,” Decker said. “I did tell him that if Elsie contacts them, it’s imperative that she call us back. She’s needed in a murder investigation.”

“As a witness.”

“As a witness, as a perpetrator, as a coconspirator. I don’t know yet because all the evidence isn’t in. Not knowing the details, I could sure use Elsie’s help.”

“And what are the odds that Elsie will call back?”

“Don’t know,” Decker said. “If she’s frightened of Baer and if we find him and put him behind bars, she might be more inclined to help. First we have to find her.” He shook his head. “We haven’t been able to find a local felon. How are we going to find someone in a foreign country?”

McAdams paused. “If Bertram is at home in Germany, maybe we could go and talk to him there. Maybe he can shed some light on this mess. He certainly cost us enough money and manpower. A couple of tickets to Europe would be a drop in the bucket.”

“True. Want me to get the coffee this time?” Decker asked.

“We should get a pod machine.”

“We should,” Decker said. “Since you bought the last pod machine, how about if I buy a new one?”

“Buy a better one than I did,” McAdams said. “That lasted all of six months. Why are you buying anything when you’re leaving soon?”

“My parting gift to Greenbury.”
