  37. About the Publisher

“I remember his name because I entered it in our database. As far as I know, he’s not in Philadelphia,” Cindy said. “But I have a call in to the data center that scans the automated license plate readers. I’ll let you know if his number was spotted anywhere.”

“Thank you, honey. It would be really helpful if you got a hit. Because right now, we’re sort of floundering.”

“Did the DNA come back?”

“I thought it would come on Friday, but I think the holiday weekend is pushing everything back a couple of days.” Decker started making fresh coffee. “I’m not even sure we’re pointed in the right direction.”

Cindy turned to her father. “Daddy, if you think it’s related to your case, it’s related.”

“Love your confidence.” He kissed his daughter’s cheek. “It’s great to see you, princess.”

“I know … Gotta treasure each moment, right?”

Decker said, “Indeed we do. Are you okay?”

“I’m fine.” But her expression was off. “How’s Grandma?”

“She’s okay now, but she had quite a nasty scare.”

“I know. I talked to her. When I did, she sounded stoic as ever. I’m thinking that we might go visit her next time we both get off. Take the kids to all the amusement parks. Then I think maybe I should speed it up. No one lasts forever. Not even Grandma.”

“She’s pretty close to immortal.”

“I always tell Koby when the world comes to an end, the only survivors will be cockroaches and Grandma.” Cindy’s eyes watered. “It’s good to see you.”

Decker hugged her. “What’s wrong, Cindy?”

“It’s all good, Daddy, honest.” She exhaled. “I don’t know why I’m so emotional.”

Decker said, “Just get it out. You’ll feel better.”

“Okay.” She smiled. “I’ve transferred to Homicide. Starting right after the holidays.”

Decker was taken aback. “Really?”

“Yeah, you think you’re the only one who can call himself elite?”

“Congratulations.” He laughed. “I thought you were happy in CAPS. You’ve certainly been there long enough. Shows you what I know.”

“I was very happy in CAPS. Moving wasn’t my idea.”

“So, what happened?”

“I have a friend in Homicide. She kept bugging me.”

“Brought you to the dark side, huh?”

Cindy smiled. “I had CAPS down pat. I think I’m a little nervous about Homicide. I’m a little on the old side to be a newbie. Are you going to buck me up?”

“You don’t need it, Cyn. You’ll be a fantastic homicide detective.”

“Except I’m used to living victims.”

“There are many, many living victims in Homicide. The main one just happens to be dead.” He hugged her tightly. “You’ll do great.”

“Thanks. Any words of advice?”
