She looked through the photos again. They had all become such good friends, caring for and helping each other as well as the island. Coming here had been exciting, fulfilling and even healing. They had discovered a completely different way of living from the one they had at home.

But Moira was right. She would be sad to leave Kyri, but now that she had Willow back in her life, and the joy of being a grandmother to look forward to, she knew she would have to go.

The thought of Stelios flashed into her mind. He was fun and he made her laugh, which hadn’t happened with a man for a very long time; but she didn’t think it was any more than that.

She thought about Penny and Nikos. Now that did seem serious. Except for the small question of her missing husband. Nell had been divorced so long, she didn’t know what the current situation was. Could a husband refuse to give you a divorce? She seemed to remember a story in the papers of a husband who’d done just that. Oh dear, poor Penny! But at least her lovely daughter Wendy was still here, though she’d gone to spend some time at the spa in the White Hotel.

Penny herself was sitting in her own room, thinking roughly the same thing. She was scared. Nikos seemed to love her, but he hadn’t repeated the invitation to stay with him. Her instinct told her that he could be trusted – but what if it was all some kind of fantasy? There was something of the romantic in his character, the knight in shining armour. What if he had needed to rekindle a romance from long ago, but had come to realize that was where it should have stayed?

She felt suddenly cold and vulnerable, her new-found confidence seeping away. She wished Wendy was back from her spa. She was so wonderfully reassuring and down to earth. ‘Just ask him,’ she would probably advise. As if it were as easy as that.

And where the hell was Colin?

And then there was the question of leaving Kyri, the place that had become more real to her than her own home. And the people who lived here – Takis, Cassandra, Demetria, even Andreas the fisherman – had become closer and more important to her than her actual neighbours.

Leaving would be an almost unimaginable wrench.
