She got out her phone and showed them the Kyri Island website that Nikos had set up. There was a large review of one of the boathouses, claiming that it was dirty, noisy and unsafe for children. There were even photos to back it up. Demetria was right. This could be a disaster.
‘Let’s go down there right now!’ Moira suggested. ‘Obviously it’s the fault of the people who’re staying there.’
‘That is part of the mystery!’ Demetria said angrily. ‘They are empty until the new guests arrive.’
They ran from the beach, pausing only to dry their feet on the pathway. Moira was in such a rush that she just stuffed her sandy feet into her canvas shoes and half-dragged Penny behind her. ‘Hurry, it won’t be light for long.’ They borrowed bikes from the communal pile – another of Nikos’s schemes – and pedalled towards the boathouses, with Demetria following behind in her little car on account of her ridiculously high heels.
Armed with the bad review, they collected the keys and ran off to inspect the row of boathouses that they had all worked so hard to make perfect. They checked each open-plan seating and kitchen area, plus every bedroom. All were immaculate, with shining basins and showers and beautifully folded towels, plus spotless kitchens and bedrooms that could easily have graced a luxury brochure.
‘What we really need is an iPad so we can see the images on this review better,’ said Moira. ‘I don’t suppose anyone’s got one?’
A huge grin lit up Demetria’s features as she produced one from her voluminous handbag. ‘I bought on internet,’ she explained. ‘Cheap because someone have it before me. Also –’ another infectious grin – ‘I am allowed it as expense now I am big businesswoman!’
They studied the photos on the larger screen of Demetria’s iPad.
‘Where is that exactly?’ Moira demanded angrily. They held the iPad screen out in front of them, but it was difficult to identify the individual property.
‘And as for noisy,’ Moira protested, ‘listen! There’s complete and utter silence.’
‘And how can you say it’s dangerous for children?’ Penny fumed. ‘We make it absolutely clear where the property is. Of course it’s on the water! You can see the set-up in all the pictures we put up. Plus it’s a boathouse, for God’s sake!’
Moira looked at the other two. ‘If it’s not any of these boathouses, then which boathouse is it?’
The truth suddenly dawned on them. Moira clutched Penny’s hand.
‘It’s Marigold’s!’ they chorused. ‘What the hell are we going to do about that woman?’
