‘It has to be Nell’s daughter, Willow!’ Penny explained happily. ‘She promised Nell she would put lots of stuff on Instagram to thank everyone for how kind they’ve been over the baby.’

She got out her phone and opened the app.

Don’t go to Santorini with a million other people! Willow had posted. Go to the undiscovered Greek island of Kyri! With its beautiful beaches and friendly people, you will get a welcome you’ll never forget!

‘Well, Mr Mayor, what do you think of that?’ Penny demanded, laughing.

The smile in Nikos’s eyes was so tender, it almost melted Penny where she stood – but Nell was right. She had to tell him what Marigold had done, and find out where they stood.

‘You have helped Kyri a great deal,’ Nikos told them. ‘Painting those boathouses and finding the furniture brought everyone together. There are a lot of plans to open bed and breakfasts. This interest on Instagram will be very useful. Most people on Kyri are not very up to date about the means of modern communication.’

‘Them and me both,’ muttered Dora.

‘I still put my money on the printed word,’ added Karl with an engaging grin.

‘Of course you do. That’s because you’re a Cambridge professor,’ replied Dora with an answering smile.

The feast was in full swing when they climbed down the hillside. The tourist boat guests, the men in hideous brightly coloured swimming trunks that would have been more at home in St Tropez and the girls in minuscule bikinis were necking equally garish cocktails and piling their plates with salad and meat.

‘I must admit,’ Karl commented, ‘it smells damn good!’

‘I love the look of that salad with feta and watermelon,’ confessed Penny. ‘I must ask Moira for the recipe.’

‘She’ll have no idea,’ Dora said. ‘I bet it’s all down to Nell. Hey, Nell, we’re not trying to con a free lunch, we just wanted to tell you that Willow has been brilliant!’

Nell smiled delightedly. ‘Has she, how?’

‘Thanks to her we’ve got three more bookings. Takis is thrilled.’

‘That’s wonderful. And it means Naomi must be all right, too. Willow is something called an “influencer”. Companies actually approach her to plug their stuff for money! She’s got thousands of followers.’

‘It sounds a bit like Jesus,’ Karl smiled. ‘He would have been good on Instagram. Lots of pictures of miracles, like feeding the five thousand and turning water into wine.’

‘Karl, don’t be naughty,’ teased Dora. ‘Anyway it’s really good news.’

‘You can have some lunch if you wait ten minutes,’ Nell offered. ‘This lot are about to set sail. I hope they don’t fall into the deep blue briny. They’ve had so many cocktails I doubt they’d even notice!’

They all watched the hedonistic diners, who had each paid thirty euros for a day of gentle debauchery.
