‘Are you OK?’ Moira enquired. ‘Not worrying that Adonis back there will go and tell his boss about the weird English ladies snooping around?’
‘I hadn’t thought of that. Do you think he was suspicious, then?’
‘He did seem to rush off to get his mobile, but that could have been to access the football results or check how fabulous he looked on Facebook. I suppose it was odd that we were looking at statues when we don’t even live here. Not the kind of thing you can take home and give Auntie Vera for her birthday.’
Despite the crowds at the top of the hill, the harbour was packed with even more tourists in the cafes, souvenir shops and a row of pleasure craft. Nikos’s boat was moored slightly away from the rest. He was standing in the covered cabin area, apparently deep in thought. When Penny waved, he smiled and waved back.
‘I must admit,’ Moira said, laughing, ‘he’s quite attractive as mayors go.’
‘Stay there and I’ll come and get you,’ he shouted, heading for the steps at the back of the boat.
‘How is the baby?’ he enquired as he held out a hand to help Penny onto the blow-up dinghy. ‘Should we wait here, or go back to Kyri?’
Penny’s smile softened at the concern in his voice. Colin wouldn’t have even entertained the thought.
‘I don’t know. I think I’d better call Nell,’ she said once they were aboard. She sat down and got out her phone.
‘Glass of wine?’ Nikos asked them. ‘I have some opened in the galley.’
‘Fabulous,’ Moira thanked him. ‘What did I say about him being more attractive than the average mayor?’ she whispered to Penny.
‘Nell, oh thank goodness,’ Penny exclaimed when her friend picked up. ‘How is Naomi?’
Nell burst into tears.
‘Oh my God, Nell, what’s happened?’
‘It’s going to be all right. There was this terrible moment when I saw she’d stopped breathing . . .’
‘. . . and it was Mum who noticed and raised the alarm,’ intervened Willow, who had clearly grabbed the phone. ‘Ollie and I just haven’t got words to thank her.’
‘Do you want to stay on for a while?’ Penny asked once the phone was back with Nell.
Nell paused, not sure how to answer. Her instinct was to say yes, but she didn’t want to intrude.
‘We can’t do without her now,’ called Willow in the background. ‘She’s our guardian angel.’
‘Ooh,’ Moira giggled as soon as they’d put the phone down. ‘I bet Marigold won’t be happy about that. Talk of the devil, look – there she is on the quay, waving.’
‘Nikos,’ Penny asked suddenly. ‘Do you think we could leave now? As in now, now?’
