"I'm going to write down what we're sure of," Jon began. "We don't want to put down queries and what we think may have happened... First of all, we know that Slinky and Miss Ballinger and, of course, that girl, are all convinced that there is a treasure to be found either in the Dolphin or somewhere near. We know, too, that they have the clue on the scrap of parchment which Great-Uncle Charles left for me, but we don't know whether they have deciphered it. Another thing we're certain of is that they want the map and would go a long way to get hold of it."

"They even sent a messenger after it who made you look goofy!" Penny murmured as she lay on her back with her eyes closed.

Jon continued as if he had not heard the last remark.

"Another thing we're sure of is that Slinky has a duplicate key to our room, and until we get that lock changed he can go in there and nose around whenever we're out."

"He can't unlock the box, anyway," Penny said, "and there's nothing else in that room, is there?"

"If he wanted to see inside the box badly enough I expect he could have another key made... I've only just thought of that, but perhaps we ought to keep the box in my bedroom."

"What I think," Penny went on dreamily, "is that we ought to watch them all, all the time, and sooner or later they'll think of something that we haven't, and then we can nip in first and get the treasure."

"Very practical and helpful!" Jon said. "Thank you very much. Now, there's another thing. We found the letter and the clue in the Bible and that started us off, but I don't think they will even get the same start."

"Just be quiet for a minute, Jon, and listen. There's a sort of hum like you get in a field in summer. It's wizard. Listen."

With a sigh, Jon put his notebook on the grass beside him, lay back and closed his eyes. Perhaps Penny was right. No reason why they shouldn't take it easy for a few minutes... Sun was lovely, too...

Jon was warm and comfortable, and when he closed his eyes the world slipped away.

Penny was asleep already.

They slept for an hour and in that time several things happened. High up under the walls they could not be seen from outside, and only from inside by someone who came right round the keep and then looked up to their eyrie.
