I would have been even less annoyed had I had more to do. As the first night drew nearer, David and everyone else grew busier and my life became a barren waste. The weather was shocking: it rained every day, and it was impossible even to go for boring walks. Flora was my joy and my delight, but so alien to me were the feelings with which she inspired me that I managed to unite intense joy and intense boredom in the same instant, and the pain of the rift made me even worse. The final grievance was that David, when he was at home, was intensely disagreeable: he is always affected by the part he is playing, but in television a part only lasts for three weeks, whereas this time I was condemned to a whole season of Flamineo who happened to be a self-centered existentialist pimp. Apart from the nature of the character, I think David was also intensely worried about whether he was going to be a success or not. He cared tremendously about what Wyndham Farrar thought of him, and was very anxious that everyone should take him seriously as a proper straight actor. I saw no reason to doubt that he would be so taken, myself, but he is not possessed with great selfassurance.
