“It’s not even funny, but the laugh track tries to make you think it is.”

“Yeah.” I share the same opinions, but I don’t really know how to have a conversation with him right now.

I want to ask Wyatt about his conversation with Josh last night. I want to know every little detail, what Josh asked him, how Wyatt answered.

How do I ask, though?

I guess being direct is the best policy.

“Can I ask you something?”

“Hmm?” Wyatt turns to me, his sandwich stuck in his mouth mid-bite. “What’s up?”

Except with the food in his mouth, it comes out more like Wha ah?

“What did Josh say to you last night?”

“Whadyo ean?” What do you mean?

“Did he ask you anything about us? Did he say anything to you about me?”

“Oh.” No.

“Please just take the food out of your mouth. I’m being serious here. Did he say anything at all about me?”

“He asked where you were, and I told him you had to schmooze with your family for a bit. That’s it, literally the only time you came up.”

“Are you sure?”

“The conversation wasn’t that deep.”

“Can you give me the rundown?”

“Are you serious?”

“I just want to make sure he didn’t tell you anything that you shouldn’t have heard, or that you said something you shouldn’t have said.”

Wyatt lets out this sudden low laugh. “We’re not spies, Neil. We’re pretending to be boyfriends. It’s not that big of a deal.”

“I know, I know. I’m just … worried about what he might’ve said.”

“Like that you’re rude and abrasive and pretty selfish?”

“He said all that?” I’m going to kick Josh’s ass.

“No, no! But I live with you. I’ve seen you at your worst. What is Josh going to tell me that I don’t already know? Unless you’ve got a lizard tail, or if your family is secretly a cult and there isn’t really a wedding, and I was dragged here for a ritual sacrifice.”

I stare at him.

Wyatt shrugs. “It happens.”

“It really doesn’t.”

But if those aren’t things that Josh said, does that mean … ?

“Is that how you see me?” I ask.

Wyatt sighs, setting his food down on the coffee table. “You’ve got to admit, dude, you’re not the easiest person to get along with.”

“I try.”

“Do you?”

“Whatever.” I brush him off. “I just don’t want Josh filling your head with ideas.”

“What exactly is he going to tell me?”

“I don’t know.” I hate that I don’t have an answer for him. I should have one, but I don’t. “I just don’t want him to mess things up with us.”

Wyatt raises an eyebrow. “With us?”

He eats the final bite of his sandwich.

“You know what I mean.”
