But when I get to our booth, I can see that Wyatt is talking to someone. And who could he be talking to? Who else at this godforsaken wedding might he know? It’s like a slow-motion reveal in a horror movie, when the identity of the true killer dawns on the audience and there’s this collective understanding.

Josh is dressed in a nice black blazer and a white button-down that’s hugging his chest in just the right way.

“Oh, there you are!” Wyatt smiles at me. “We were just talking about Mr. Daniels’s last exam.”

Josh turns to me as he comes down from laughing about something. I don’t know what could possibly be so funny about Mr. Daniels or his AP History exams, but I don’t like this. I don’t like that Josh is talking to Wyatt.

Not. One. Bit.

“Hey, Neil.”

“Hey.” I keep my tone short, sliding into the booth next to Wyatt. I wrap my hand around his and keep us shoulder to shoulder.

Time to really put this lie to the test.

“Hi, Josh!” I grin when I say his name. “When did you get in?”

“Maybe two hours ago?” he says. “Had to reschedule my flight.”

“Oh, that’s a bummer.”

“Yeah …” He sounds so dejected. What else did he expect? Coming here, talking to Wyatt behind my back. I’ll have to have a conversation with Wyatt about what to say when I’m not around just in case Josh tries this again.

“Was the flight decent?” Wyatt asks.

“Yeah, there was a stop in Dallas, so it was extra long, but I’m glad to be here.”

“That’s nice.” I clench my teeth.

“Is it?” Wyatt glances down at me. “I mean, our flight was already pretty long.”

I squeeze his hand lightly.

“Are you excited to be here, Wyatt?” Josh asks.

What is he insinuating? That he shouldn’t be excited to be here with me? Or that Wyatt should be on guard because Josh is here to win me back?

“Yeah, I’ve never been to the West Coast before. I’m hoping we’ll have time to look around before the return flight.”

“Right? It’s a gorgeous city if you know the right places to go,” Josh says. “Have you taken him to In-N-Out yet, Neil?”

“No. Not yet.”

Josh smiles softly. “Neil loves In-N-Out. I got so sick of it last time we were here together. He wanted it for every meal.”

Part of me wants to be angry at Josh for something as simple as talking, but I can’t deny this weird comfort I feel from the moment. Almost like I enjoy him sitting here with us, having dinner. The fuck is up with that?

I shouldn’t want to spend more time with Josh. If anything, I should be pushing him farther away. Once he’s gone, I can stop getting all cozy next to Fowler. Though I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t enjoying Wyatt’s warmth.
