Maybe he decided not to come. Maybe I’m in the clear.

The next time the door opens, I tell myself not to look up, even as whoever just walked in comes closer and closer to our table. I’m not going to let him mess up this weekend, and if I’m in love with Wyatt, then he should have all of my attention, right?

Except it isn’t Josh. And I know it’s not him because of three simple words.

“What’s up, homos?”

Lindsay’s standing there, in a white dress that comes down to her knees, an off-white/almost-gold jacket, her black hair down her shoulders, and her favorite red lipstick on.

“Lindsay!” I almost leap out of the booth to wrap my arms around her.

She hugs me back just as tight. “Neil!”

It’s been too long since I’ve seen my cousin over something other than my phone screen. There was a bit of a family emergency with her dad’s mom last Christmas, so she missed the entire thing. Meaning I was left to deal with our family totally alone.

Worst part was that she didn’t even feel a little bit guilty about it.

“When did you get in?” I ask.

“Like an hour ago? We checked in, changed, and came right down. I didn’t even have time to shower.”

“That’s what that smell is.”

She gets me back with a jab at my ribs.

“Ow!”

“That’s what you get, assmunch.” We both let go of each other, and she doesn’t even bother with an invitation before she slides right into the booth, across from Wyatt. “I’m Lindsay, Neil’s cousin.”

“This is my, um …” Shit, what do I call him? Boyfriend? Date? Do I even have to lie to Lindsay? She’d probably think this entire thing is hilarious before she’d tell me how pathetic it is that I’m lying about having a date.

So no, I won’t tell her.

“I’m Neil’s boyfriend.” Wyatt swoops in, throwing on his southern charm by offering Lindsay a handshake.

“Boyfriend?” She turns to me, a mix of surprise and excitement on her face.

I feel like this is going to go poorly.

At least, it’s going to go poorly for me.

“When did this happen?” she asks.

“A few days ago.” I slide into the booth beside her.

“Tell me all the details,” Lindsay says to Wyatt and not to me. It’s almost like I’ve been shut out of the conversation entirely.

Wyatt looks at me, unsure at first. “We’re roommates at Steerfield. We were talking for a long time, going out to study and stuff, going to movies. And, then we kissed, and things kept going from there.”

Oh Jesus. Seriously?

I look at Lindsay’s face. I like to think that we’ve known each other long enough for me to know what she’s thinking. But right now? I have no idea if she believes a single word that Wyatt’s said so far.
