“Charming. Are we so sure Josh is the problem here?”

I shoot Wyatt a glare. “He didn’t believe me when I said I didn’t have any feelings for him. So, obviously, I have to prove him wrong. And moving on with you is my ticket to that.”

“Obviously,” Wyatt says in a mocking tone.

“I bring you to Beverly Hills and he’ll lose interest. He’ll accept the breakup. It’s perfect.”

“I hate you so much,” Wyatt says bluntly. “What kind of wedding even lasts a whole week?”

“Ever heard of those traditional four-day weddings? Yeah, my family believes that more is more. Because, you know, life is a competition against everyone else,” I tell him. “It’ll be easy, and all you have to do is come to California with me.”

“Why would I do that?”

“Out of the kindness of your heart?”

“Yeah, no.”

“Why not?”

“One, because it’s a stupid plan and you’re going to get caught. Two, because you’re being mean to Josh, and he doesn’t deserve that. And three, because I really don’t want to, and even if I did, do you honestly think my moms will let me go all the way across the country with a stranger?”

“I’m not a stranger. We’ve lived together for months!”

“Name one thing about me.” Wyatt crosses his arms. “What’s my favorite color?”

He wears a lot of flannel, and his backpack is red.

“Red?”

“Song?”

Oh, I know this one! But what was the title?

“That Phoebe Bridgers song. The one where she’s sad, but not really.”

“Movie?”

“One of those Avengers movies probably. Everyone likes those.”

“Food?”

“This one is obvious—you love Wendy’s.”

Wyatt starts counting on his fingers. “Yellow. ‘All That’ by Carly Rae Jepsen. Chungking Express. And Wendy’s isn’t a food. My favorite kind of food is a chorizo burrito with refried beans and rice.”

“Okay, but I know lots of other things!” I declare.

“Like what?”

“You play the guitar.”

“No shit, Sherlock.”

“You hate algebra.”

He always takes forever to do his algebra homework, and he’s always complaining about failing his tests.

“Who would like math?”

“Oh, and you like anime! You’re always rewatching that demon one.”

“Jujutsu Kaisen,” he corrects me.

“Yeah, that one. And I know that you like early Taylor Swift better than her new stuff, which is just such a wrong opinion.”

Wyatt shrugs. “She peaked with Fearless. I’m not afraid to say that.”

“But that’s not the point. We don’t have to know every little detail about each other; we can make all of that up later. What’s important is that, if you’re there and Josh sees it, he’ll drop this weird crush he has on me.”
