“I know,” she said. “I’ve felt bad about it.” He was jealous not only of her dreams, but of Daniel, too. Would he be able to admit that?

“Nancy’s put a wedge between us. I didn’t even know her. What’s she got against us?”

“It started before Nancy. I’ve been feeling apart from you for a long time. But maybe it’s not a bad thing, maybe we just have to get on with our lives as individuals. Eventually we’ll have to be more separate than we’ve been.”

“Yes, professor,” Jerram teased, a little more like himself. “But there has to be some reason why you get messages and I don’t. We’ve always shared our dreams. All of a sudden, we don’t. There must be a reason.”

“Maybe only some people have this … gift. Maybe sharing our dreams wasn’t the same as this. Some gift. .. I’m beginning to hate it. I do hate it.”

“So I guess I should consider myself lucky,” Jerram said. “But I wouldn’t mind having it, too.” “You’ve got to tell Mackey for me. I don’t know why Nancy told me about that skeleton first, but her friend’s body is definitely in the caves.” Jerram nodded and looked toward the dark window. “At least I can do something to help,” he said.

They found Cyn’s body almost immediately. Silver got a lot of flack about that, people saying the police had been negligent in searching before. But Cyn hadn’t been killed in the caves, and her body had only recently been put there.

“The lack of blood on the site tells us the murder took place elsewhere,” the chief said. Rose wondered if that was why Nancy couldn’t tell her sooner, because Cyn had been alive.

Rose knew she wouldn’t feel the same about their annual Christmas pilgrimage to Ladyvale Farm. But before she even said anything, Dad came upstairs to her room and told her he’d found a great new nursery in Danville on the way home from work. “It was time for a change anyway, darlin’,” he said. “That farm store was getting tacky.”

“Thanks, Dad.”

Silver Henning came to the house the next day, to talk to Rose. Mackey had not kept the fact that she was continuing to get psychic messages a secret. She remembered what he had said: “It’s never wise to mask the truth.”
