Chet looked over the first page: Things are changing in this country. And when America is no longer the America we know, and these great states are no longer united, you need to be able to protect yourself, your family and your community...

He flipped to the next page: When they come for your guns, are you going to be able to fight back?...

“Fine,” he said, and came back on air. He had no idea what the man had been talking about, so he dumped the call. “Sorry. We seem to have lost you there.” He put on the next call. “What’s up?”

Leaving the station after his show, Chet was surprised to see a group of four men waiting for him in the parking lot behind the building. They were middle-aged white guys dressed in camouflage, so they were obviously his people, but he still felt a twinge of apprehension as he walked toward his Jeep.

“Chet!” one of them called out. He had a huge gray-black Duck Dynasty beard.

He waved, kept walking.

“Chet!”

All four men were walking toward him, and he saw no way to avoid them. Their pickup was parked right next to his Jeep, the only two vehicles on the lot save for Gil Consatino’s van, and since Gil worked the shift after his, it would be morning before he came out of the station. He was stuck.

“Hey, guys,” he said as they approached.

In addition to the man with the giant beard, there was a short beefy dude with a shaved head, and two tall skinny guys who had to be twins.

“Good to meet you!” “Great to meet you!” “Glad to finally meet you!” They were shaking his hand, clapping arms around his shoulders, patting him on the back.

“So why are you gentlemen out so late?” he asked. He considered their clothes. “In from a hunt?”

Duck Dynasty shook his head. “Nah. We were just out partying.”

“And listenin’ to your show,” the guy with the shaved head chimed in.

“Well, I’m glad of that. Always happy to meet a fan.” He had continued walking, hoping to reach his Jeep before getting bogged down in a conversation. Ahead, he heard a noise, a rustling in the bushes behind the vehicles. He looked toward the source of the sound, just outside the scope of the building’s lights, and shivered involuntarily, the night suddenly seeming a little bit darker.

The bushes shook.

“You through in there?” Duck Dynasty called.

An elderly woman emerged from the foliage, straightening out a too-tight skirt. “I’m done. We gonna keep partying?”

One of the tall twins grinned. “Want a free BJ? This old broad’s givin’ ’em like they’re goin’ out of style.”

“Going by my wife, they are,” Duck Dynasty said. All three of his friends laughed.
