Chapters (34)
“And get a lecture because someone walked into an unlocked house and looked at some papers, but didn’t take them? Plus no jewelry, money, credit cards, or guns are gone? No thanks. He’ll never believe me, you know that.”
“Are you absolutely one hundred percent sure you left the papers in the envelope?”
“Yes.”
“So who, besides you, me, Eli, and Seth would know about them?”
“I don’t know … nobody.”
“What about when you left the bank? Did you run into someone?” he asked.
“Nope. But even if someone saw me, I was carrying an envelope. Big deal.”
“Someone must have seen you. Or found out you had those documents.”
“The only person who would be interested in them is searching for the same thing Prescott was.”
“Do you mean whoever killed him?”
“Maybe,” I said and then thought about it some more. “Very likely.”
“In that case, you should definitely call Bobby.”
My phone dinged with a text message and I slid it out of my pocket. “It’s from Kit. She’s stuck at her desk and wants to know if I’d mind eating in the newsroom. Or, as she calls it, the shark tank.”
Another ding.
I shook my head. “And would I mind bringing lunch.”
“What are you going to do?” Quinn asked.
“Pick up something to eat, have lunch with her at the Trib, and go to my meeting at the Folger.”
“I meant about calling Bobby.”
“We can’t prove any crime was committed.” I twirled my finger next to my ear. “Bobby already thinks the idea Prescott might have been murdered because he was looking for a hidden treasure is nuts. If I tell him about this, he’s going to say I jumped into the same crazy boat.”
Quinn shrugged, but in the end he agreed I was probably right.
“I’ll make coffee,” he said. “Why don’t you clean up in here? Maybe you should lock the envelope in the file cabinet this time.”
“The horse has already left the barn,” I said. “There’s no point locking up anything.”
We had breakfast then he kissed me good-bye at the front door.
“Text me when you get to D.C. And when you leave. I hope nothing goes wrong.”
“I’ll be fine. The meeting at the Folger is at one. I probably won’t be there more than an hour or an hour and a half, tops.”
“I wasn’t talking about the Folger,” he said. “I was talking about the shark tank. The Trib.”
