  39. About the Author

Lucy crossed her arms. “You’re way too stressed out. Relax. Everything’s fine. Claire’s probably just talking to Chip because she has a crush on him.”

Marty paused. “You think Claire has a crush on Chip?”

“Oh yeah. Big time.” Lucy popped the top off the tartar sauce container. “She’s always telling me all these stories about him, and whenever he comes around, she gets excited and her eyes light up.”

Marty considered this for a moment. He’d noticed that Claire was nice to Chip, but she was nice to everyone. If anyone would know if Claire liked the guy, though, it was Lucy.

“Maybe you’re right. I just need to be ready to run. Being in here…” He let out a sigh. His eyes felt heavy, and his shoulders were sore from sitting on the bed all day. “I’m getting stir crazy.”

Lucy smiled at him. “I don’t blame you, but try not to worry. We’ll meet with the attorney next week and figure everything out.”

Marty nodded. It helped to have someone to bounce his fears onto. After spending so many hours alone in this room, he felt like he was going mad.

He was also sick of talking about himself. “How was your interview?” he asked. “Do you think you’ll like the job?”

“Well…” Lucy bit her lip and narrowed her eyes. “It wasn’t so much an interview as it was a date.”

He raised his eyebrows. “Oh. Why did you say it was an interview?”

“It’s just, you know.” She took a bite of the fried fish. “It’s not a big deal, but the date was with someone you know.”

“Someone I know?” He thought on this for a moment, but he couldn’t think of any friends they had in common.

Lucy took a sip of soda before quickly adding, “It was David Marilyn.”

“What?” Marty stood up. “Please don’t tell me that you tried to talk to him.”

“Not exactly. He’s kind of hard to talk to,” Lucy said. “I could hardly get a word in. The guy is in love with himself.”

Marty smiled. “Yeah, that’s Dave.”

Lucy stuffed some french fries into her mouth. “I get what you meant now, about him not being the answer.”

“I’m glad you didn’t talk about me to him,” Marty said, shaking his head. “That would’ve been a disaster.”

“I mean…I mentioned that I knew you, and then all of a sudden, he didn’t want to talk anymore.”

Marty stared at her. “Lucy…”

“I know, I should’ve listened to you. It’s not a big deal, though. It was just a bad date.”

“But if you were asking about me –”
