“Aw, Colt,” Barry said. He walked over to his son. “Listen. It’s hard to live with regrets. I know . . . I have a few of my own. But regrets are the devil’s tool. He uses them to accuse us. To tell us that we’ll never escape the past. But that’s a lie. The moment we’re forgiven, the past is done. The only thing we should remember from them is our salvation. God’s intervention. Our memory of the past should remind us that we have a God who saves.”

Barry met his middle son’s eyes, then gave a look to Dodge and Ranger. Back to Colt. “Let the sun go down on the past. It’s a new day. Let’s walk into it with grace.”

He clamped a hand on Colt’s shoulder. “If Dodge says you’re the best man, then you’re the best man.”

Dodge grinned. “What Dad said.”

Colt lifted a shoulder. But nodded at Dodge.

“Ready?” Ranger said, taking another look in the mirror.

“Let’s roll,” said Dodge.

Outside, the crowd had already gathered, some of them taking chairs, others milling around. Barry left the boys and greeted Sheldon Starr and his wife, along with Ace and Moose Mulligan. Peyton Samson and Nash Remington came in together, holding hands, and he spotted a few of the Starr kids, Winter and Shasta. Then there was Dodge’s buddy Malachi, along with Goodwin and Levi, chatting up Ranger and Colt.

Noemi emerged from the house dressed in an orange skirt, a white blouse, her hair wrapped. She wore the bright coral beads that Ranger had given her on their wedding day.

How Barry wished he could have seen that day—to see Ranger dancing up the aisle the way Noemi told it. Now, Noemi fairly glowed, and if he wasn’t imagining things, he suspected that maybe Larke wouldn’t be the only one giving him a grandbaby soon.

Larke and Tae came down the aisle and sat on the groom’s side, next to Noemi.

The music started—Goodwin was running the sound via his iPod—and the guests took their seats.

Barry stepped up to the front, under the arch, with his Bible. Because Dodge had asked him to.

He met Dodge’s eyes and nodded.

His son strode up the aisle, followed by Colt, then Ranger. They stood beside their brother.

Oh, the man was beaming. Even ran his thumb along his cheek, wiping away a little wetness.

Yeah, Barry got that.

Down the aisle came Dr. Effie Yazzie, the former head of OB-GYN of a hospital in Anchorage. She now worked out of her own office in town. She took her place in the front row.

Peyton and Winter followed. They wore their own dresses—no one was getting too fancy here—and stood opposite the boys.
