Colt eased her away. “Okay, okay, I give. I might be a little broken.” But he touched her face with his hand. “I think I’m just going to lay here and let you guys figure out what happens next.”
Tae got up and found a rag in a pile on a nearby bench as Colt worked himself to a sitting position.
Colt’s gaze cast between Ranger and Dodge. “That your handiwork?” he said, nodding to Sergei and his mess.
“What are brothers for?” Dodge said. He smiled.
Colt met it with his own smile, and she almost felt the healing between them.
“I thought you were just a pilot.”
“I can shoot. You’re not the only one who joined the military.”
“Yeah, but Ranger and I are actual—”
“Stop talking, before Dodge decides to shoot you too.” Tae knelt next to him and pressed the rag to his wound. He grunted but reached up and held it in place as he grinned.
“Now what?” Tae said. “You’re all infected.”
“I guess we’re your next test subjects,” Dodge said. “Good thing I don’t have a broken heart.”
“Not broken. Just big. Big heart.”
“Oh, for Pete’s sake.” Dodge shook his head, then looked at Tae. “What about you?”
“I was vaccinated long ago, in the first round.”
“I thought you said it wasn’t tested on humans.”
“Aw, I sorta don’t count myself.”
“Wow. You and Colt belong together,” Ranger said.
Colt gave her a grin. “Yep.”
And she had nothing for that. Oh, he was trouble.
Delicious, perfect trouble.
“Okay, well, as long as Colt doesn’t need to be life-flighted out of here, we’ll figure out a way to detox this place and go home.” Ranger pulled out his phone.
Colt looked at Tae. “Go home.”
“I heard him.”
He laced his fingers through hers. “Here’s the deal. Remember, I live out of a duffel bag. And where you go, I go. So . . . home is wherever you want it to be. As long as we’re together.”
“Where do you think I’m going to go where you won’t find me, anyway?” She leaned in. “You’re a very hard man to escape.”
“Finally, she gets it,” he said winking at his brothers, and then he kissed her.
“Is it stupid for me to suggest a little rest?” Major Austin stepped back from where he had finished stitching Colt’s latest wound. He’d already shared the X-ray results of his chest. Two bruised ribs, but nothing Colt couldn’t handle.
As long as he kept things on the down low.
“Not stupid at all. I’m ready for some beach time. A little R & R, for as long as it takes.”
