The entanglements of Sheila, though queer to more simple characters, were clear and even sensibly reasoned to Sheila. She honestly believed that any girl could get any man if she really went out for him, and had the proper opportunities to see him. She naturally counted on her face to help her, but that did not alter her line of thought; a face was a help, but it was opportunity and going all out that really mattered. All her life she had resented the family’s position, but still more Maggie’s and Janet’s satisfied acceptance of it. She wanted money and big houses, and to be waited on. She began to want these things from the moment she heard the story of Cinderella, but from the day she went to her first film she knew that these things did not only come to a girl in fairy-tales, but could happen in real life. Through her childhood years she fixed her mind on the prince, or his equivalent, who would give her one kiss and then she would be dripping with mink and lolling in a rich car. It was with adolescence that the dream became less clear. She began to go to little dances and parties, and she had a thoughtful look at the boys. The sons of people very like her mother, respectable, hardworking, but on the whole unambitious. Where was the prince coming from out of that collection, and yet, as things were, they would be all the men she would know. She toyed with the vision of going into business and marrying the owner; she had seen that in a lot of films, but it seemed a dim chance, the owner would probably be old, and married, and the girls in the office possibly never saw him, anyway.
