“I adjusted her thermostat,” Edward said, glaring. “I'm happy to admit that. Her granddaughter wasn't there to help her, so I did!”
“My grandmother would never take your help,” Lily said. “No matter what she needed, she would never ask you. You're lying.”
Suddenly Edward's face turned bright red, the way it always did whenever she had challenged him. His lips thinned, and his hazel eyes turned black with rage. She saw the hate building in him, coming from that secret pool deep inside, and she felt a quick rush of fear.
“You think I'm lying? Why don't you ask Maeve?” Edward asked, stepping forward.
Lily felt as if he'd punched her in the stomach. He knew Maeve was in a coma.
“Come on, Lily. Let's go upstairs and see Maeve,” Patrick said, taking her arm.
Lily nodded, still watching Edward. As she backed away, he tracked her with his eyes.
“Stay away, Edward,” Patrick said. “There's an investigation going on.”
“I think I will stay away,” Edward said, staring at Lily. “I have something better to do. Someone better to visit.”
Lily wanted to spring at him, but suddenly he turned and walked away fast. Lily made a small sound—something between fear and frustration—and Patrick looked down at her.
“What was that all about?” Patrick asked.
“He saw Rose today,” Lily said. “This morning. He followed me to Rhode Island last night. I thought I saw a car, but then it seemed to disappear. I was so excited about seeing Rose and Liam, I just wasn't paying enough attention.” She raised her hands to her head, twisted them into her hair. “After all these years I led him straight to her.”
“How do you know he saw her?”
“Someone stopped to talk to Rose, out in the yard. Liam told me he thought it was Edward—and Edward just told me he'd seen ‘a girl with green eyes.'”
“Playing a game with you,” Patrick said, eyes narrowing.
“What's he going to do?” Lily asked.
Patrick shrugged. “I don't like this, that's for sure. It haunted me for years, wondering what he did to you. And now, knowing Marisa, I see it even more. There's something in that man that made two women like you run as far as they could.”
“Is what you said true? About his fingerprints?” Lily asked.
Patrick shook his head. “Nah. But his reaction was interesting, wasn't it? The point is, the police don't want him anywhere near Maeve. I'll call them.” He looked down at Lily. “You know what I noticed? He called you Lily so easily.”
She nodded, her pulse still racing.
“He knew you as Mara. It's harder for me to get used to your new name, and I wasn't married to you.”
