“I've paid my debt for those,” he said, pointing at the photos. “You had me arrested, and I did all the time I had to do. You can't do anything more to me.”

“Anything more to you?” Lily asked, incredulous, wanting to scream at him. Her heart was racing, and Judy had to put her hand on her wrist to gentle her down.

“He doesn't get it,” Judy said calmly. “He never did. And he's certainly never paid his debts.”

“I'll see you in court,” Edward said to Lily.

“He worked for my father,” Judy said. “That's how I met him. My father had a seat on the New York Stock Exchange. Ed did maintenance work at my father's boatyard. But he was smart, and funny, and my father liked him. Ed used to read the Wall Street Journal, asking my father for stock tips. My father was impressed with some of his picks, and he offered him a job as an assistant. That's how he got started.”

“Your father gave him a job. . . .” Marisa said.

“Ed was smart. He made connections very fast and easily. He made up an Ivy League background. It was the boom eighties, and he got a job as a stockbroker right after I left him.” Judy laughed lightly. “Unlucky, in some ways, for him.”

“Why?”

“Well . . .” Judy began.

“Very unlucky for him,” said the other young woman, and for the first time, Lily turned to smile at her. She was obviously a lawyer—in her gray striped suit and black patent leather pumps, her arms full of files, her dark hair pulled back in a neat French twist. She and Lindsey had had their heads together while Lily and Judy talked.

“I haven't met you yet,” Lily said. “I'm Lily Malone. Are you Judy's lawyer?”

“I'm Rebecca,” the young woman said, laughing. “So sorry not to have introduced myself first. But I've been a little mesmerized by this whole thing. Yes, I consider myself her lawyer.”

“And a very fine one,” Judy said proudly.

Just then, the court doors swung open, and a marshal signaled everyone to start filing in. Edward and his lawyer had started arguing again. His lawyer was advising something, and Edward was shaking his head with vehemence, shaking his finger. Lindsey came forward, tapped Lily on the shoulder.

“Are you ready?” she asked.

“Yes,” Lily said, smiling at Judy. “I am.”

Liam and Marisa and Judy and everyone from Hubbard's Point were right with her, and they all filed into the courtroom.

Liam watched Lily in action, and she was incredible. All through the last days, he had wanted to tell her what Joe and Patrick were doing—trying to put together a case for the judge, bringing together the other two women in Edward Hunter's life—so that Lindsey Winship could argue against forcing Rose to take the DNA test.
