But the safety net of being surrounded by family she cared about was burst the moment she woke up, because she’d drunk too much red wine. It hadn’t helped her sinuses. It also didn’t get her any closer to working out how she felt about Johnny, and she knew that welcoming him into her bed for two nights running wasn’t the best way to keep a clear head. But maybe that was the point. She heard Kate telling her to just fuck it, and go with her heart. And she knew that Kate would stand by that, even though it was Johnny who had in effect betrayed both of them when he became a witness for the defence in the Burton trial. The Burton family had blood on its hands, but Kelly knew that Kate would say that it was nobody else’s fault. Only theirs. Johnny was no more culpable than the lawyers. Kate had reminded her of that when he’d moved out only a couple of months ago. Kelly envied her friend’s clarity of thinking.
Whatever she felt right now, she tried to clear her head and concentrate on just today. Wasn’t that what Kate always said? Kelly had seen her friend transform into a new woman since she’d kicked Derek out and divorced him. Even her face was different, as her smile and laughter overhauled her whole demeanour.
