Massimo Rivelli also saw himself as a hero, one of the ancient sons of Gods who fought against monsters and won. He was Jason battling the Hydra – and every time he chopped off one head, another grew to take its place. He was Perseus slaying Medusa, he was Theseus in the labyrinth, he was Hercules cleaning the Augean stable. What he lacked in formal education, Rivelli made up for with an exaggerated sense of self-importance.

He would make a fresh start in the East – like Alexander the Great, another of his personal favourites. There were opportunities in the East. Offers had been made – not quite as respectable as the work he had been doing in Europe, but just as lucrative. Dropping the fashion front would be a relief. He could focus on the core business: drug smuggling, people trafficking and, when necessary, a spot of contract killing.

But making a fresh start in a new town cost money, and money was the one thing Rivelli did not have. His assets were frozen, pending tiresome legal processes in three countries, and his trusted lieutenants had turned against him. They would regret that. What Rivelli needed right now was a lump sum, and quickly.

What Rivelli needed was a desperate multi-millionaire.

What Rivelli needed was Rocky Rodean.

And what better way of getting to Rocky Rodean than through his daughter, Maya – who, conveniently, was just about to arrive in town for Tokyo Fashion Week.

Rodean v Rodean was a gift to the press, who unanimously sided with Rocky and deployed their vast investigative power to dig up old photographs of Jessica doing something suggestive with a baguette at a party in 1994. This proved she was a slut and should be burnt at the stake.

It was a gift to Maya Rodean, who surfed a fresh wave of publicity just as she was launching her new collection for Laruche. She made herself available for quotes and photo opps, and always insisted that she was credited as ‘designer daughter Maya’. She travelled to Tokyo on a tsunami of publicity, determined to make the most of her father’s personal unhappiness.

It was even a gift to Jessica who, though far from confident that she’d get the ridiculously high sum that she was asking for, had already secured an extremely lucrative book deal and was lining up celeb reality shows over the next four or five years.
