She and Jerry spoke occasionally. He called to check up on her and tell her stories about AA and the twelve steps. Forgiveness was one of them, but the idea seemed remote and strange to Sherri, who blamed herself for everything. Jerry knew this, but he was careful to never bring up Arthur. It was through Jerry that Sherri heard that the resort had closed. “Some brothers from Houston bought it,” he said. “They set up a giant bonfire out back and torched anything with the logo: golf score cards, boxes of swizzle sticks, pens, mugs, matchbooks. Anything with the bunny. They even tore up and burned the carpeting. I’m glad I kept all the keepsake mugs you girls sold me. And I’ll take my key to my grave.” Even with her complicated memories of the resort, it seemed wrong and dishonest to dismantle its history. Her time there ended so abruptly that she had frequent dreams of wandering around a gutted version of the place. She’d show up for her shift but nobody was there, only Gloria.
