TV: Violence? You wanna threaten me with violence? I am the everlasting God of violence, pal.

BRO (slapping TV): Man—she drove—an Impala.

Pause.

We hear sounds outside: A car’s door opens and slams several times. Meanwhile:

HE OUTSIDE: Don’t get in the car. (Slam.) Don’t get in the car. (Slam.) Don’t even—don’t do it. (Slam.) You are not getting in. Don’t do it. (Slam.)

SHE OUTSIDE (simultaneously): I’m getting in the car. (Door opens.) I’m getting in the car. (—Opens.) I’m getting in. (—Opens.) I’m getting in.

CASS (looking out): Well just git in it and drive, and ye shall be healed…A brand-new Camaro. Oh you nasty. Boy I’ll bet them things is quick.

(The dialogue outside overlaps: “Don’t do it—” “Don’t boss me—”)

BRO: What is it, a Camaro?

CASS: A dirty filthy nasty sexy Camaro. Brand new…And guess whose? (Turning to BRO:) I hope they got cigarettes!

BRO: Who is it?

CASS: Just some people; visitors…just the love of your life. Also accompanied by the love of her life.

BRO: Yer goofin’—! Turn out the light.

Doorbell rings. Pause.

CASS AND BRO: Who is it? Who’s there?

GIB’S VOICE: It’s Gib.

SUZANNE’S VOICE: It’s Gilbert Hightower.

BRO (whispering): Turn out the light.

GIB’S VOICE: And Suzanne.

CASS prepares to answer the door, jamming his pants on.

BRO (whispering): Cut the light out!

CASS: What? No.

BRO (menacing hiss): Turn it out…Not the porch light! Keep the porch light on!

CASS cuts the lights, all but the muted TV.

BRO: The TV! The TV, too!

TV (as CASS approaches): Please don’t. Please. Please don’t—

BLACKOUT

BRO (whispering in the dark): Okay!

A pinpoint light hits two bare buttocks upraised about waist-level.

We hear the front door opening. Light from porch now as GIB and SUZANNE enter.

BRO crouches on the hide-a-bed with his pants down, postured like the center in a football game just before the hike, his butt jutting over the back of the divan.

The couple get quite a jolt from the sight. Lights up as CASS hits the switch.

CASS: Hi!—uh—damn! The dog’s back indoors! Hey!…Gib, uh, Suzanne—damn you little critter—

DOG: Bark! bark! bark!

GIB recovers first, addressing CASS while BRO tumbles off the couch and fixes his trousers and spreads his arms for their consideration.

Pause.

GIB: What is that little Chihuahua dog’s name?

CASS: Nobody knows. Maybe Dad knows. I don’t know.

He feints after the dog. Dog gets under the couch and quiets down. Then:

GIB (to CASS): Back in Ukiah!

CASS: Yep. That’s the impression everybody’s getting.

SUZANNE: Actually we knew that. We heard.

CASS: News travels like its ass was on fire.

GIB: Well, you spoke to Carl on the phone, and he quickly got on the phone to me.

SUZANNE (to BRO): Luke—

BRO: Bro.

GIB: We had no idea you were here, Luke.

BRO and SUZANNE stare at each other.

BRO: I’m not here in any verbal sense.

He leaves the room.

SUZANNE: What did he mean by that?
