SALAZAR: Take a guess.

CASS: He got thrown out of a moving car.

SALAZAR: I’m not here to kill you.

CASS: I know! You would never do that.

SALAZAR: What kind of a gun do I have? (CASS shrugs.) A sweet little nine.

CASS: But it’s strictly for self-defense. (As SALAZAR draws the gun and points it upward:) You in the Agency adhere to that policy.

SALAZAR: But I’m not with the Agency.

CASS: But you feel like you are.

SALAZAR: Not really…No.

Pause.

CASS: What are you after?

SALAZAR: What am I after? The question is, what are we after?

CASS: Who is “we” supposed to be?

SALAZAR: I’ll tell you who we aren’t. “We” are not me and you. “We” are me and mainly some other people. Practically not myself at all. My role here is really that of an agent. Just—not an agent of the FBI…An agent, a—I hate to call myself a “tool”—

CASS: An instrument.

SALAZAR: Right enough.

CASS: An instrument of the Law.

SALAZAR: You wish!

CASS: Here we go.

SALAZAR: The Law just locks you up and loses you. At the worst they squirt you full of poison and throw you in a grave. My people don’t stop there.

CASS: I wouldn’t think so.

SALAZAR: My people won’t hesitate to wipe out your entire family in a fireball. If possible your whole town.

CASS: I know the type.

SALAZAR: They’ll blow up the hospital you were born in. Slow-roast the guy who was the doctor at your birth.

CASS: I said I know the type.

SALAZAR: And that’s just for spittin’ on a rainy day.

CASS: WHAT DO THEY WANT?

Pause. SALAZAR puts the gun in his belt.

SALAZAR: We’d like to review the last couple of days with you, Mark. Cass.

CASS: Review away.

SALAZAR: Let’s go over your activities of the last, let’s say, forty-eight hours.

CASS: Can’t help you there.

SALAZAR: Then maybe you’re in need of a nine-millimeter attitude adjustment, pal.

CASS: You can adjust me to death, I can’t help you—I’m drawing a blank since Tonopah! And you tell me it’s Houston now?

SALAZAR: According to our information it’s been Houston since at least Friday.

CASS: And today is—

SALAZAR: Tuesday.

CASS: And Tonopah was a Wednesday. The first tequila went down at noon. I been on a pretty mean run.

SALAZAR: Are you pleading amnesia?

CASS: That’s gonna have to be my…yes.

SALAZAR: Have you heard of the Dead Sea Scrolls?

CASS: Haven’t most people?…Sure…Not with my full attention.

SALAZAR: Well, you’re just typical. Don’t feel bad.

CASS: I don’t. Who said I did?

SALAZAR: The Dead Sea Scrolls are an important revelation to mankind. They were found, dozens of papyrus scrolls, by three brothers in a cave. You know what papyrus is?

CASS: Sure. I forget. I used to.

SALAZAR: Paper, basically, of an antique process—

CASS: I know what cunnilingus is. It’s basically cunt-licking. That’s if you go ahead and speak American.

SALAZAR: All right. Will do…These three brothers in Egypt retired to a cave with the heart of a man they’d just murdered for revenge. He’d killed one of their family, and they’d taken his life in return. Now they intended to go into this dark place and eat their victim’s heart. That’s how they do things in Egypt. And they stumbled across the Scrolls, and the rest is history.
