BOBBY HAD GONE. He'd walked out the door with the suitcase he'd packed himself. At least, that was what he'd said. Rose ran to their bedroom. There was a crazy idea in her head that maybe the suitcase was empty. Maybe he actually hadn't packed, maybe all of this was just a whim. Or a cruel joke. Or …She ripped through his closet, checking off items in a wardrobe she knew as well as her own. The green short-sleeved shirt she'd bought for him at Saks was gone, and so was the blue one from Turnbull and Asser—why the hell was he taking a dress shirt to the country? Maybe he hadn't seen what he was grabbing because he'd been in such a hurry to get away—away from her. The brown slacks from Bloomingdale's weren't on their hanger, and neither were the gray ones. He had packed. Still, Rose pawed through his shoes, and his underwear drawer, gathering evidence that she no longer needed. She rushed into the bathroom. He'd taken his toothbrush, his toothpaste, the electric razor she'd given him for Christmas, and the citrusy cologne she'd had made up especially for him at Floris.

I've lost him.

Rose walked back out to the bedroom and sat on the bed. And that was when she saw it. Bobby's pill bottle was on the floor on his side of the bed. Either he'd meant to pack it and he'd dropped it or he'd been carrying it in his pocket and it had fallen out. Or maybe it had fallen off the nightstand where he kept it in case he had an attack during the night. No matter how it had happened, the medicine was here in the apartment and Bobby was leaving without it. Rose picked up the bottle and raced for the foyer, where there was an intercom phone that connected their apartment with the doorman's desk in the lobby below. She knew the doorman could still catch Bobby because it always took forever for the concierge to retrieve the car from the garage underneath their apartment building. Bobby would be in the lobby or outside waiting. He had to be. Rose lifted the phone and waited for the doorman to come on the line. As she waited, she looked out the foyer window to the street below.
