Davie’s room hadn’t been spared. Boxes and tubes of Tinkertoys and LEGOs had been dumped on his bed. A toy chest had been overturned, spilling a variety of action figures, crayons, and puzzles onto the carpet. Books had been pulled from the bookshelf. The items that appeared to have had the least scrutiny were the completed LEGO and Tinkertoy models on the display shelves, but even they seemed askew.

Jesse remembered how neat Davie had kept everything. Seeing his room so ransacked had to have been traumatic. Jesse picked up the model of Jonathan’s SUV. “You were right. Whoever went through this room saw these as solid. Do you think the police have searched as well?”

Ethel stepped next to him. “I think Bradshaw locked this place down as soon as he got word of the break-in. He wouldn’t involve the local police if he could avoid it. Bradshaw probably sent a forensics team through, but they made the same mistake. Still, you’d better make sure the drive’s still there and then put the KryptoFold back in the replica with it. I’ll call Susan and tell her we’d like to help get the house in order. Then you can make your discovery. Meanwhile, I want a few more hours to gather some information on the man Pete identified.”

“This Ed O’Hara?”

“Yes. He’s our main suspect. By the end of the day, we’ll hand the KryptoFold, the backup drive of Jonathan’s computer, and O’Hara’s name over to Cory Bradshaw in one package.”

Jesse retrieved the KryptoFold device from his backpack and returned it to the hiding place. “You know, I stopped searching Davie’s room as soon as I found what was hidden here. ‘Daddy’s secret,’ Davie called it.” He put the replica back on the shelf and studied the others. Most were smaller. “What if I missed something?” His eye caught the model at the far end of the shelf. “This looks like their house.”

With Ethel close behind, he picked up the replica of the Finches’ home. The roof wasn’t peaked correctly, but Davie had done the best he could with the available LEGO sizes. Jesse removed the top, one piece at a time. He found Davie had even constructed internal walls to create rooms. Yet it wasn’t a dollhouse. There was no furniture or a family of LEGO figures. The only loose item was a strip of curled paper about the size of what Jesse had found wrapped around the KryptoFold. It was in the space approximating Davie’s bedroom. Jesse’s heart raced. Could this be the private key to the virtual wallet holding twenty million dollars of Bitcoin?

Ethel wedged in beside him because she was too short to see over his shoulder. “Well, for God’s sake, unravel it.”
