Christi stopped outside Eye of the Beholder, beside the bench where Beth had approached her yesterday offering goodies, shelter from the rain—and a job that could tide her over while she continued to seek employment in her field. A quest that could be done from anywhere, as Tasha had pointed out.
She also had a free place to stay, if she wanted it. A charming free place.
Should she take a risk? Leave Dallas—and all her unhappy memories—behind? Or was it foolish to hope this little seaside town would offer greener pastures?
She sank onto the bench and closed her eyes.
Lord, I could use your help here. I’m not asking for writing in the sky, but a clue would be welcome. Anything that would give me direction and—
A scraping sound came from across the street, and she straightened up. A tall, dark-haired guy about her age was positioning an A-frame sign, filled with writing, near the entrance of The Perfect Blend.
As he retreated inside, she squinted at the quote that was attributed to Einstein.
“In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.”
O-kay. That was weird timing.
Could this be the answer to her prayer for guidance? Or was it mere coincidence?
Impossible to say—but the message was apropos.
The door of the shop behind her opened, and Beth stuck her head out. “Christi! I thought it was you—but I got the impression you were leaving yesterday.”
“That was the plan, until a few unexpected opportunities came along.” She flicked a glance at the sign across the street again. Maybe she ought to take the message to heart—and follow her heart. She gripped the edge of the bench and went for it. “Your job was one of them.”
Beth’s eyebrows peaked. “You mean you’re considering it?”
“I wasn’t at first—but a place to live kind of dropped into my lap yesterday, and I have no real ties to Dallas. I also like Hope Harbor. There’s something special about this place.” Plus, if I stay, I may be able to convince Jack he can trust me to repay a loan.
“I agree. I lived in Coos Bay for twenty years, but this has always been my favorite getaway spot. When I needed to relocate—and decided to open a shop—this was my first choice.” Her tone remained conversational, but a dark shadow passed over her face. Again.
Further proof that Beth’s decision to open Eye of the Beholder had been motivated by more than business reasons. Especially since she’d also moved here, despite the ring on her left hand.
Perhaps the shop owner was as much in need of a friend in town as she was, and the position would benefit both of them beyond a mere employer/employee arrangement.
“If you have a few minutes, would you like to talk specifics about the job?” Christi stood.
“Absolutely.” She waved her inside.
