I groan. “Fine. I’ll do your chores. Just tell me!”
She drops into her chair and pulls a folded paper out of her pocket. “Nora’s network finally turned up a lead.” She smooths the paper out on the table, revealing a photo shot from a security camera of Kaden with two people. The first is a white man with black hair I don’t recognize; the other is a woman who seems familiar, but I can only see a sliver of her light brown face. The glint of one silver eye creates a halo across the rest.
“Kaden has two new wraith friends,” Kara says grimly. “I guess now we know what he’s been up to while he can’t get to Colin.”
My stomach drops at the sight of the photo. This must be why Kaden has been lying low: he’s recruiting more wraiths. We could barely handle one. What are we going to do against three?
Rose pats my shoulder consolingly, leaving a petal behind on my shirt. “Don’t worry. Colin is safe with the trees.”
Safe, but no closer to discovering who the wraiths are working for and what he wants, and Samhain is just over a week away. Whatever they’re up to, it’s going down soon.
“Does Nora know about this?” I ask.
Kara nods. “She’s trying to track down who they are and see if they’re from Wick. If they are, she thinks Kaden’s been sticking around town.”
I raise my mug and mutter behind it, “Meanwhile, you two are going out for ice cream.”
Kara rolls her eyes. “You’re just in a bad mood because Colin’s the golden child and you’re still swapping out glamour bags.”
I nearly choke on my hot chocolate. My unhappiness with my chore-filled life the last few months hasn’t been a secret, but the twins haven’t acknowledged it before.
“Kara,” Rose chides softly, but Kara doesn’t relent.
“Maybe he should take your place at the inn,” Kara continues. “At least he’s not scared of his powers.”
“I’m not scared!”
Kara’s voice turns mocking. “ ‘It was terrible, Nora. I can’t get their faces out of my head. Why are my powers so useless?’ ” She throws a dramatic hand across her forehead, then smirks at me. “Don’t forget, sis, I hear everything.”
It’s all I can do not to throw my steaming hot chocolate in her face. Instead, I wipe my fisted hand across my nose and blow the sparkling faerie dust into her face. “Sneezes,” I command.
“Ah-choo! Anna! Ah-choo! I’m going—ah-choo!—to kill you!”
But I’ve already bolted from the kitchen and up the wrought-iron staircase on the side of the house to the rooftop garden. The stairs empty into a widow’s walk, and I dive randomly down one of the black stone paths, disappearing into a cloud of brightly colored flowers.
