“Supernatural creatures’ eyes turn silver on camera,” Rose explains. “Whatever Kaden is, he’s not human.”
“I thought he might be since something made the vision all fuzzy,” I say, though I hadn’t been sure if it was Kaden, the man Liam wounded, or both. “What’s he doing downtown?”
Rose hums quietly. “He’s looking for something. I can feel his frustration.”
With all psychic powers, some people’s specific abilities are stronger than others, and Gran says Rose is one of the most powerful empaths she’s ever met. She can feel almost all of Wick. It’s why she’s halfway distracted all the time—there’s too much else to listen to.
“Colin, that’s not a good idea,” Kara says to some thought only she can hear.
Colin stares at her for a heartbeat, then drops his head. “Yeah, you’re right. I just need a minute.” He slips from the room.
“What?” I ask.
“He wanted to go after him,” Kara explains with a roll of her eyes.
Leaping off the bed, I bolt from the room before my thoughts can settle enough for Kara to pick up on.
Max. Max. Max. Max. Max, I think over and over again.
“Anna, I know what you’re doing!” Kara’s voice follows me into the hall, but I keep repeating Max’s name until I catch up with Colin. It’s hard not to think about something you don’t want Kara to hear, because by thinking about not thinking about it, you always end up thinking about it. So instead, I pick one thought and repeat it to muddle everything until I’m a safe distance away.
“Did you change your mind about going after Kaden?” I ask, already sure I know his answer.
“Nope,” he says without stopping. “I just didn’t want Kara to know.”
I grin. This is our chance. If we can find Kaden, maybe he can lead us to the man Liam wounded. Then Colin can get some answers, and my family will see that for once, my powers are just as useful as everyone else’s.
We stop by my room so I can put on a pair of rainboots. Max joins us, and then we’re off again. Max bounds ahead down the stairs, then meets us at the base with a nod at the kitchen: the coast is clear. When I head straight for it, Colin hesitates.
“Where are you going?” He gestures at the front door.
“If Nora sees us, she won’t let us go,” I say, highly doubting she’d take “we’re hunting a potentially evil magical creature” as a good excuse for shirking my chores. “Besides, we need a ride.”
