‘This was my scatterbrain of a brother’s grand idea, but in fairness, it’s worked. Credit where it’s due,’ Patrick chuckled.
‘How is Daniel?’
‘As crazy as ever. I told him you were popping by today and he apologizes for not being able to be here. Daniel has woman trouble, as always.’
‘Is he still with Dolores?’
‘Bejesus, you’re way behind. He was never really with Dolores. She wasn’t Daniel’s type. She gave birth to a daughter, then moved back to Ireland, same as Bridie did. He’s been married again since then and is now getting another divorce. He must like wedding cake. Mum would marmalize him, as you cockneys say, if she were still around. Anyway, enough about him, how you doing? I would take your coat, but I can see you’re cold. Nippy out there today, isn’t it? I’ll pour you a brandy instead. That’ll warm you up.’
I downed the brandy, then told Patrick about Marnie, her nephew, the club they ran, the private parties, and the way they exploited young lads. I didn’t mention that Vinny had lied about his age, I left that bit out, along with finding Vinny in bed with Macca.
‘To take advantage of young lads in such a way is appalling, Queenie.’
‘My Vinny’s not been himself since he opened up to me. I know he looks older, but he’s only recently turned fourteen. Your mum loved Vinny and she hated nonces as much as I bloody well do. She told me if I ever had any trouble I was to come to you, Patrick. So I hope you don’t think I’m taking liberties rocking up here like this. That Macca only lives around the corner and I’m scared Vinny hasn’t seen or heard the last of him. It keeps me awake at night.’
Patrick ran his fingers over the stubble on his chin, deep in thought. ‘Mum told me I was always to help you, Queenie. She loved you dearly. You were most certainly the daughter she never had and you cared for her like a daughter when she was ill. Myself and Daniel could never have done what you did. You’re family to us; of course I’ll sort this for you. No word to anyone, mind. I mean not Vinny, Albie, Viv or anybody – no one must know. Have you already told them you were coming to see me?’
‘Goodness, no,’ I exclaimed. ‘I’ve told nobody. You can trust me, Patrick. I would never betray my Mary and I won’t betray her sons. You boys were her world.’
‘Good girl. Give me a few weeks, tops, and this’ll be sorted. Don’t ring me or come here again any time soon though. You can never be too careful. I’ll visit you, in time.’
I stood up. ‘Thank you, Patrick. I’ll be off now. Give my regards to Daniel.’
Patrick hugged me. ‘You take care, Queenie.’
My eyes welled up as memories of the past came flooding back. ‘I often hold your mum’s rosary beads in my hand and ask her advice on things. I know deep down she’s still with me.’
