‘Yeah. The same house. Pretty nice, as I recall. Crime still pays. I spoke to the local cops. She’s there just now, but if she is involved in this case she’ll be keeping a low profile. She might even take off for a bit.’

Clare nodded. ‘I think we’ll go down there tomorrow. I’ve Melanie Fraser coming in at nine fifteen. We’ll head for Edinburgh after that.’ She stood thinking for a minute. Then she said, ‘Any luck with Zac Buchanan?’

‘Not so far. They have an address for him but no one home when they checked.’

‘What about the photo from the speed camera?’

‘I’ve sent it to the prison to see if they reckon it’s him. Should hear by tomorrow.’

Clare stood thinking. Then she said, ‘If Zac did come up from Leven to steal the BMW he must have had an accomplice who gave him a lift. Either that or he caught a bus.’

Chris frowned. ‘So?’

‘There’s CCTV around the bus station, isn’t there?’

‘I’m starting not to like the sound of this.’

‘We need someone to go through the footage to check for anyone who might be Zac.’

‘Clare! That’s a needle in a haystack job. There must be hundreds of men arrive here by bus. It is the height of the tourist season.’

‘Get some decent images for him. He’ll be on our system and the prison will have their own shots. Check with the cops down in Leven. They might have a more recent photo. And the sooner the better, Chris. If Zac Buchanan is involved in the murder of Russell Fox then we need to find him – and fast.’

Benjy was beyond delighted to see Clare and he demonstrated this by running round and round, chasing his tail.

‘He’s been as good as gold,’ Moira told Clare. ‘And it got us out walking, too.’

Clare said how grateful she was and handed over a hastily procured bottle of wine as a thank-you. She bent to clip Benjy’s lead on but Moira seemed set for a chat.

‘I hear your victim’s related to Gaby – from the TV.’

Clare smiled. ‘Moira, I can’t…’

‘Yeah, I know. Don’t worry, Clare. I’m not fishing. Just that, well, you’ll be busy. Lot of pressure on you. So, if you do need Benjy looked after a bit more…’

As she fastened Benjy into his car restraint, Moira’s words rang in her head. Lot of pressure. It had only been a couple of days. No time at all in a murder investigation. But when the press were all over it that was another matter. And the pressure would only increase.
