Bill and Janey indicated they would carry on with this and Clare went on. ‘The Lodge was fenced off while the party were staying there and they had a security guard on the gate. Chris and I spoke to him yesterday and, based on what he told us, we plan to re-interview the three men. They did tell us they had a delivery of pizzas around seven on Friday evening, but they omitted to mention what we believe was a minibus of women who arrived an hour later.’

‘Are we looking into the guard too?’ Nita asked.

‘I think so, Nita. Could you check him out please? He told us Doug Gerrard had asked him to keep quiet about the minibus of women. I’d like to know if he has reason to keep quiet. Might our Mr Gerrard have something on him?’

Nita indicated she would do this. Then she said, ‘What about Gaby Fox and her husband?’

Janey raised her hand. ‘Already checked out, Nita. No convictions. Nothing iffy either, as far as I can tell. Both doing well in their careers. Luke Gasparini was tweeting about securing a big name for his next documentary series.’

Bill raised a hand. ‘Who benefits from the victim’s death?’

‘I’ve not checked yet,’ Clare said. ‘And I’d rather not ask the family if I can avoid it. Maybe you could track down his solicitor?’

Bill scribbled a note on his pad and Clare went on.

‘Anyone looked into the pizza delivery guy?’

Jim cleared his throat. ‘No convictions, Clare. And I checked his deliveries before and after the Lodge. All fine.’

‘Thanks, Jim.’ Clare stood thinking for a moment. Had she covered everything? And then she remembered the CCTV footage. ‘Sara has been going through footage from two security cameras sited at the top of the drive, just at the Heras fencing. There’s a point in the evening,’ she scanned the room for Sara, ‘about eleven, was it?’

Sara nodded.

‘Right. So around eleven on Friday night the security guard goes off towards the back of the house, leaving the gate unmanned. Sara spent hours yesterday going through the footage so I’d like a fresh pair of eyes to look at it this morning, please.’

Mandy, one of Sara’s fellow uniformed officers, raised her hand and Clare smiled her thanks.

She glanced across to Chris. ‘Have I forgotten anything?’

‘Phone records?’

‘Good point, Chris, thanks. I need someone to go through Russell Fox’s phone records. Check his contacts and calls within the past month. Social media too, the works. Anything iffy, get hold of me.’
