‘I agree,’ Chris said. ‘Problem is finding the evidence.’

‘You could lean on the friends,’ Tony said. ‘See if they know more than they’re letting on.’

Clare nodded. ‘Yeah, it’s the logical place to start. But we’ve spoken to them twice and I’m not sure they do know about Doug and Mark Mooney. I’ll get the Glasgow cops to put out feelers. See if anyone’s saying anything.’

‘What about overdose woman? Gaby?’ Tony asked.

‘Gaby… yes.’ Clare nodded slowly. ‘I do need to speak to her again, in the light of Mark’s confession. See if she can shed any light on it.’

‘Might want to catch her soon then,’ Chris said. ‘If the psychiatrist’s happy she could be out any time.’

Clare reached for her phone. ‘I’ll check with Mandy now. She’s been up there all morning.’

‘Doc says she can go home in a couple of hours,’ Mandy said. ‘Just waiting for the paperwork to be signed off.’

‘Is the brother taking her?’

‘David? No. He only stayed ten minutes.’

‘Eh?’ Clare couldn’t keep the surprise out of her voice. According to Chris, David Fox had been impatient to see his sister.

‘Yeah, I was surprised,’ Mandy said. ‘He came racing along the corridor desperate to see her. Next thing I know he’s out again, heading for the exit.’

‘And Gaby?’ Clare said. ‘Was she okay? Not upset? They hadn’t argued?’

‘Don’t think so, boss. Erm, do you want to speak to her yourself?’

A few minutes later Clare heard Gaby’s voice. ‘Inspector, is everything okay?’

‘Yes, thanks. I just wondered… did you manage to see your brother?’

‘Yes I did.’ Clare could hear the warmth in Gaby’s voice. ‘After everything that’s happened, you know, it’s such a blessing to be in touch with David again. I’m not a religious person, Clare, but it’s as if he was sent to help me.’

Clare’s mind was racing. Clearly David’s rapid departure hadn’t been the result of an argument. ‘That’s lovely,’ she said, trying to keep her tone light. ‘Did he stay long?’

‘No,’ she said. ‘He’d something to attend to. But he promised to be back soon.’ She laughed. ‘I tried to tell him I’d be getting out but he said it couldn’t wait.’

‘Catching up on old times?’ Clare said. She was fishing but she hoped Gaby wouldn’t realise.

‘Not really. It was just a quick visit.’

She was getting nowhere. There was nothing for it but to ask outright. ‘Gaby,’ she said, ‘I hope you don’t think I’m being nosey, but can I ask what you talked about with David?’

‘Oh, erm I suppose…’

Clare said quickly, ‘The more information we have, you see, the more chance there is we’ll find the person responsible for Russell’s death.’
