It was late morning by the time Mark Mooney had consulted with a solicitor and the inevitable DNA sample had been sent to the lab. Raymond agreed to prioritise it.

‘Got David Fox’s result back,’ Sara said. ‘Negative for the gun cartridge.’

‘Dammit.’ Clare couldn’t keep the disappointment out of her voice.

‘Sorry, boss.’

Clare turned to Chris. ‘Any reason we can’t release David Fox?’

He shrugged. ‘Not that I can think. Want to run it past Tony?’

Tony agreed. ‘Yeah. Get rid. We’ve enough loose ends in this investigation as it is. Phone through and get Dundee to release him.’

Chris went off to make the phone call and Clare sat down.

Tony studied her. ‘You don’t look quite as grim today.’

‘Thank you very much!’

‘Seriously. It’s good to see you looking a bit brighter. So, where are we now?’

‘Good question. We need to bring Luke Gasparini in again. I’m pretty sure his statement yesterday was all lies. Thing is…’

‘Yeah?’

She shook her head. ‘I can understand Luke trying to kill Gaby if he was desperate enough and he couldn’t see any other way to pay Doug back. But I still don’t understand why Russell was killed.’

Chris came back into the room. ‘That’s David Fox released. He wants to see Gaby so I’ve called ahead to Mandy up at the hospital. Told her it’s fine to let him in.’

‘No one else, though?’ Clare said.

‘No. Mandy knows the score. She’ll call us if anyone else turns up.’

‘So what now?’ Tony said.

Clare sighed. ‘Bit of a waiting game. Mark Mooney…’

‘Who?’

‘The security guard. He’s in an interview room waiting on his DNA result.’

‘That’ll take a while, though.’

‘Yeah I know. But I’m not keen to let him go until we have it.’

‘You think it’s his on the cartridge?’ Tony said.

Clare shook her head. ‘Probably not. He had the opportunity, but I can’t see what the motive would be.’

‘Bit suspicious, him asking for a solicitor,’ Chris said. ‘And he wasn’t keen to give his DNA, was he?’

Clare nodded. ‘True, but there might be another reason for that. Maybe nothing to do with our murder.’ She checked her watch. ‘Either way, we’ll know in a few hours.’

There was a tap at the door and Jim poked his head round. ‘Glasgow just been on the phone, Clare. They’ve picked up Doug Gerrard.’

‘Bringing him through?’

‘Yeah. Should be here in a couple of hours at worst.’

‘Thanks, Jim.’ Clare frowned. ‘What were we talking about?’

Before anyone could speak Clare’s phone began to ring. She didn’t recognise the number and she clicked to take the call. ‘DI Mackay.’

‘Inspector, this is Natasha Lynch again. Carloway Money.’

‘Oh yes, Ms Lynch. Russell Fox’s financial advisor.’

‘That’s right.’

‘How can I help?’
