“Tomorrow morning,” Finn says. “Eight o’clock, Stone Mountain Park. Be in the parking lot by the trailhead, near the South Woods Gate, alone. I’ll call you then at this number with further instructions. You show with that money, and you come alone, or I’ll do to Tane what I did to Yousef. But slower.”
“Finn,” I shout, but it’s too late—Finn is gone. Fear and panic start spinning up in my chest like a pair of dynamos. I stand still, close my eyes, and let the feelings wash over me. For a terrifying moment I think they will drag me under with them, into the dark. My heart stops for a beat. And then it starts again, limping along at a rapid clip. It’s passed. I still feel scared, but it’s at a remove, and in the wake of my fear I can act. I take a breath and open my eyes. “Someone call the Dearborn police. And I need Gus Cimino’s cell number. Now.”
“I’ll get the cops,” Caesar says, tapping on his phone.
Frankie holds up his own phone, displaying his contact info for Gus. I dial the number on Frankie’s screen, willing Gus to answer his phone. After the fourth ring, Gus answers. “Yeah?”
“Gus, it’s Suzie. I need you to do me a favor. I’m going to text you an address for Yousef Hassan in Dearborn. He’s a friend and he’s in real trouble. We’re trying to call the cops but I need someone I trust to go check on him. Can you do that for me?”
“Send me the address. I’ll leave as soon as I get it.”
“Thank you.” I end the call and text him Yousef’s address. A few seconds later he texts me a thumbs-up emoji. I glance up to see Caesar on his phone, speaking quietly.
“Suze?” Ethan says.
“I got Gus. He’s going to check on Yousef.”
Uncle Gavin speaks, his words like a severed head dropped onto the coffee table. “Yousef’s dead. You heard him. Finn.”
Ethan slowly shakes his head. “But … Finn’s here, watching Tane.”
“Unless he’s got help,” I say.
Caesar ends his call. “I got the Dearborn police. They’re sending a squad car to Yousef’s house.”
“I’ve got Gus heading over there, too,” I say. “Did you ever get a chance to look for those three soldiers? I found one, Stephen Chow. He was killed in a drunk driving accident. I need to know the other two.”
Caesar pulls out his laptop from a case on the floor next to the couch.
“Why do you need to know about them right now?” Frankie says.
“Because I think at least one of them is alive, and whoever it is there’s a good chance he’s working with Finn. There’s no way Finn would fly to Detroit and leave Tane alone.”
