“Outside in the street there was gunfire. I looked out the giant hole in the wall and saw our three guys by the cars, exchanging fire with someone on a roof who was pinning them down. One of the cars was already trashed, tires blown, the windshield gone. I saw the muzzle flash from a roof maybe a hundred yards away. I raised my M4 and found the guy in my sights, but before I could fire a second guy stood up next to the one firing. The second guy had an RPG launcher and aimed it down the street. I got lucky and shot the guy just before he pulled the trigger. He bent forward, and then the roof blew up. He’d fired the RPG into the roof right in front of him. All gone in a big cloud of smoke.
“Nobody else seemed interested in shooting at us anymore, so I went back to check on your dad. He was on his hands and knees, throwing up. Yousef was talking to Perkins, telling him he would be okay. I walked around to secure the room, making sure Ahmed and his men were dead, and that’s when I saw a door at the end of the kitchen. It was a bathroom, and there wasn’t anyone hiding in it, but there were a lot of duffels in there, a dozen of them. I opened one up and found more bricks of cash, these ones wrapped in gold seals—hundred-dollar bills. Ahmed had been busy that day.
“So we took them.”
It takes me a moment to realize Finn has stopped talking. “You took the money?” I say.
