"Gosh! Oh Gosh!" said Mary. "I can see everything. I can see Mummy in the garden... and I can see those lazy boys down by the stream. Peter, they've stopped searching... they're paddling'!"

Peter jumped for the lowest branch and pulled herself up beside her.

"Shout together," she said. "Ahoooooy there! Ahoy!"

They saw Dickie look up and round to say something to David. They shouted again, but the boys seemed to look everywhere but in the right direction.

"Oh Gosh!" said Mary. "They are so silly. Why don't they look here? There's Mackie now. He can hear me. He's barking! I'm sure he is."

"Let's get down," said Peter. "They'll never see us and I'll tell you what we'd better do. This is your discovery, Mary, so you slip down and find them. Maybe you can squeeze through the gorse again, and you'll be down in five minutes. If you keep to the side of the wood you won't make a track that people will see... Tell the boys what we've found and ask them to go back to Witchend for matches and the kettle and anything else we shall need to start the camp. David will know. And perhaps your mother wouldn't mind giving us a picnic lunch today so that we could have it up here and not waste time going back to the house. Will you do that, Mary? Then you can either stay and guide them back, or go with them and help to carry some of the things. I'll stay and get things ready here and if I'm ready first, I'll come and meet you... Tell David to bring everything he can think of for making a camp. Everything."
