It could be, the voice chooses now to pipe up. You know it could be. Maybe you’re just jealous he has magic and you’ve got nothing.
“What are you talking about?” Aoife asks. “We’ve been searching for you. Janey Mack, Morgan!” She rushes forward and tugs her brother into a hug, wrenching his hand out of mine, as he sways on his feet.
“I’m fine,” Morgan says. “Seriously, stop, okay?”
“But what happened to you?” Aoife demands. “How did you get here? Do you know how worried we’ve been? You’ve been gone two days!”
“Two days?” That’s not possible. It’s only been a few hours, hasn’t it?
“You have no idea how freaked out—” Toivo looks like he wants to say more but he shakes his head instead. His cheeks are bright red; I’m unsure whether it’s from cold or anger—probably both, considering the glower he’s giving me. He looks so much like Mom right now, it’s almost creepy.
“Aysha called,” he says. “She told us about your ridiculous idea.”
“It’s not ridiculous.” I plant my feet, meeting my brother’s furious gaze.
“And then Cludd published your forum post in the Messenger. Mom had to deal with hysterical students and even more hysterical parents!” Toivo spits out every syllable as if it tastes rotten.
The blood leaves my body, yanked out of my veins in an invisible riptide. “He wasn’t supposed to do that. I put it in the forum for students only.”
“Well, you got the front page you’ve always wanted,” Toivo says. He might as well have flung knives at me.
“I think I’m going to be sick.” I press a hand to my stomach, as if that ever helps.
“You two sure created quite a mess,” Aoife says. “Some parents came to pick up their kids, others came to lend support. Our parents—” She bites her lip.
“Are they pissed?” Morgan turns even paler.
“What do you think?” she says.
Morgan swallows hard before his face rearranges itself into a punk-rock sneer. “At least we’re doing something to find Hannah.”
“Where the hell were you?” Aoife asks. “And how are you here?”
“We went to the tonttukivi in Kuusikylä,” I say, because this idea was mine and Morgan shouldn’t take the fall for it. “We know this is where the tietäjä will strike next.”
“You shouldn’t be here.” Toivo points his finger at me, and I fight the urge to break it. “You have no idea the danger you’ve put Morgan in.”
“Stop telling me what to do!” The words erupt out of me. “I’m not the one using chaos magic! I’m not the one hurting hiidet or kids like Hannah!”
