“Hey, I think I’m good.” Morgan unhooks his arm from my shoulder, and I stand up straight, working the stiffness from my back.

Free of Morgan, I flick on the flashlight. The forest is completely dark now and the beam cuts a strip of yellow through the shadows on the increasingly snowy trail.

“Are we there yet?” Morgan pulls up his hood against the torrent of snow pouring down around us.

“I hope so.”

“Want to tell me what happened while I was out?” he asks.

The hiisi’s words whip up a tornado inside my mind and I tell Morgan everything.

“I still can’t believe a tietäjä could be behind this all.”

“And one of our teachers,” Morgan adds.

Mom—never!

Dad—no way!

Emmi—hard no. She’s far too nice. Besides, she and Mom were friends in university. There’s no way she’s involved.

Aleksi—possibly.

Miss Kaneda—maybe. It’s well-known gossip Kaneda left university before graduating as a tietäjä herself. I never managed to find out exactly why though. According to Mom, it’s none of my business. According to Dad, some people just aren’t cut out for it. According to Toivo, it’s because Miss Kaneda is only half Finnish, which is absolute nonsense and something only my jerk of a brother would believe.

Kaneda, Emmi, and Aleksi were all at the buck building so they couldn’t have been the ones to take Hannah. Or could they have slipped away long enough to become a kidnapper? For now, I’ll keep them on my list.

That leaves only one more tietäjä at the school.

“Joakim,” I say out loud. “It has to be.”

“Has he got tattoos?” Morgan asks.

“No idea.”

“Think he could be working with MacCrone? The hiisi said there was more than one, right?”

Dammit, yes. I’d forgotten about that. “Joakim with MacCrone as an accomplice—that makes the most sense.”

“Wish I’d been awake,” Morgan says. “I might’ve been the only druid alive to have ever seen a Finnish fairy.”

“A hiisi isn’t really a fairy.”

“Close enough.”

“You might be the only druid to have ever touched a tonttukivi,” I offer instead. “That seemed pretty intense?”

“It felt like I was getting all the energy sucked right out of me.” He shudders.

“Like, siphoning?” I say, remembering his word.

“Maybe. It was strange, like the stones wanted something from me, but I didn’t know what and then I couldn’t control the flow of energy anymore.”

“Is that when you opened the doorway?”

“I didn’t decide to do it. It just kind of happened,” Morgan says. “I don’t think I was channeling it right. I just felt all these feelings.” He wraps his arms around his stomach. “Sadness, anger, fear. The whole area is hurting.”

“I’m not surprised. The chaos mage cut the hiisi,” I say.

“Asshole.”
