I commanded the Dragonling to attack the Flesh Muncher, wanting to see if its Magical Defense was enough to protect it from attacks by this conjured monstrosity. The Dragonling ran toward the Muncher and took a leaping jump at it, snapping its jaws at the Muncher’s stem. The Flesh Muncher was super fast, however, and it whipped its head toward the Dragonling with horrible speed. The Dragonling wasn’t as fast, but it managed to just twist out of the way before diving in to snap at the Muncher’s base. There was a chomping noise, and the Dragonling leapt deftly out of the way with a ragged hunk of the Dragonling’s blood red base flower dangling from its jaws.
Struck by a sudden inspiration, I wondered what would happen if I teamed up with the Dragonling. If it looked like the Muncher was going to take a chunk out of me, I could always just disperse it, but perhaps together the Dragonling and I could take it out.
Letting the Dragonling take control of its own decisions for the moment, I ran at the Muncher from the other side, forming the correct mudras and conjuring an Ensnare spell which I flung at the Muncher’s head. The monstrous mouth was tangled up in the spell, and since the Muncher’s Magical Defense level was not particularly high, it was unable to break free.
Its mouth temporarily disabled, I leaped in and dealt it a firm kick to the head. The monster reeled, but I could feel that my Ensnare spell was wearing off. The Dragonling took its opportunity, however, and dived in to grab the Muncher’s stem just below the head. The Dragonling chewed viciously at the stem, and I put my focus back onto the Ensnare spell and pushed more of my power into it, holding it stable against the Muncher’s attempts to shake loose of it.
It took the Dragonling only about 30 seconds to bite through the tough stem that joined the Muncher’s head to the rest of its body. The stem snapped with an audible crack just as the integrity of my Ensnare began to wear off, and the head of the monstrous plant fell to the mat with a thud.
The Dragonling leaped away and did a victory lap, spitting out ragged bits of the Muncher’s stem. Astrid gave us a round of applause as I held up a hand, to reabsorb what remained of the dead Muncher.
“Well, that worked,” I said to Astrid. I was about to turn away when there was a satisfying “ping” sound and I felt a command center notification requesting my attention. With a wave of my hand, I brought up the notification. The Dragonling had gained a new ability.
