  34. About the Author

When Kyrine didn’t answer right away, I looked over my shoulder to see her smiling hesitantly. She shook her head. “The door is just a prop,” she said. “This room only exists within my core—it’s our private space.”

That was good and all, but I really hoped she wasn’t going to try to keep me here against my will. That would really put a dampener on what was turning out to be the best day of my life.

Thankfully, after a few more seconds, she sighed and relented.

“As I have shown you, you can see anywhere in the mansion,” she explained, “but you can also travel to any location within it in an instant. You need only view the mansion from above as you did before, then navigate to the area in which you wish to appear and visualize yourself there. Do this, and you can travel wherever you choose.”

“Really? I can teleport?”

“Anywhere inside the mansion’s influence, yes.”

She was looking really worried now. I guessed she had gotten used to being pretty lonely, and it was maybe understandable that she didn’t want me to leave all at once. I felt a sudden rush of sympathy for her and went over to take her hands in mine.

“You don’t need to worry, Kyrine, I’ll still be in our mansion. You can watch me while I’m in the mansion, right? And communicate with me any time you like?”

“Yes…” Kyrine said doubtfully, then suddenly smiled, as though she’d had a brilliant thought. “Ah! I have something I can do while you are occupied in the training hall! I will prepare your bedchamber!”

“Sure,” I said. “That sounds great. I can tell from looking at Belinda and Astrid’s rooms that you’re really good at that.”

I figured I’d leave the renovations up to her. I wasn’t exactly fussy. As long as I had somewhere to lay my head, I could sleep practically anywhere.

She smiled, looking relieved. “Go on then,” she said. “I’m excited to see what results you have in the training area.”

I closed my eyes and did as she had instructed, focusing on pulling my soul out of my body. My center suddenly felt light, and when I opened my eyes, I was looking at the mansion from above, as before. I navigated my focus to the training hall and was about to imagine myself there but stopped.

Astrid was there, still working out, and so I decided to watch her for a little bit before I teleported to the hall. She was currently leaping over the various pits and maneuvering around the cleaver traps in the obstacle course.
