MISTLETOE MURDER

MISTLETOE MURDER

“They may live here in town, but the Millers have never really been part of the town,” Sue said. “I mean, there’s a certain distance. You wouldn’t just drop by for a cup of coffee and a chat.”

Lucy chuckled. “Imagine dropping in on Marcia Miller!”

“Oh, Sid got to know her pretty well,” announced Sue. “He’s spent quite a lot of time in her bedroom.”

“Really?” inquired Lucy. “How did that happen? Why aren’t you upset?”

“It wasn’t like that,” Sue admitted. “He installed a closet system for her.”

“What about your mom, Franny?” Lucy asked. “What did she hear about the Millers? She always knows everything that’s going on.”

“You can say that again,” agreed Pam indignantly.

Franny moaned, knowing why Pam was upset. “My mother’s good friends with the school nurse. That’s why she knew about your daughter’s condition.”

“I dread to think what you’ve heard from her about my kids,” Lucy worried.

“I don’t listen to her,” admitted Franny. “I’ve got my own life to live.”

“Don’t we all. Too much life, in fact. I’m never going to be ready for Christmas. But I still can’t help wondering why someone would kill Sam Miller,” Lucy said pensively.

CHAPTER ONE

CHAPTER ONE

#4076 A set of the most frequently used kitchen knives, including two carving knives, a filleting knife, and a paring knife. All with carbon steel blades and rosewood handles. Our best quality. $57.

“Do you have any really sharp knives?” asked the tremulous voice. “Something that will cut through bone and gristle?”

Lucy Stone stifled a yawn, adjusted her headset, and typed the code for “knives” on the computer keyboard in front of her. Instantly the screen glowed with the eleven varieties of knives sold by Country Cousins, the giant mail-order country store.

“What kind of knives were you thinking of?” Lucy inquired politely. “Hunting knives, fishing knives, pocket knives, kitchen knives . . . ?”

“Kitchen knives, of course,” snapped the voice. “Homer hasn’t been out of the house for forty years.”

Lucy hit the code for “kitchen knives,” and the screen listed six sets of kitchen knives.
